CLOSE THE LOOP: BREAK THE RULES!

There are no rules to fashion but one: recycle your clothes. Don’t miss this rule breaking short film, and read on for some wisdom from our favourite fashion rebels.

This week, H&M launches a brand new denim collection made from textiles recycled from the Garment Collecting initiative. By collecting old clothes and turning them into new, updated styles, H&M wants to close the loop on fashion.
And as we hope you know by now; there are no rules in fashion but one: recycle your clothes. (And if Iggy Pop can’t convince you…)
We asked some of the stars from the film to share their views on fashion.

First out: legendary rocker and fashion rebel Iggy Pop.

NAME ONE RULE ALL PEOPLE SHOULD BREAK.
”Don't rock the boat.”

DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST FASHION RULE YOU CHALLENGED?
”Yeah, I walked around with holes in my jeans and no shirt, indoors.”

IN YOUR STOOGES DAYS, YOU WOULD BUY WOMENSWEAR. SHOULD MORE MEN WEAR WOMEN’S CLOTHING?
”Yes, but only if they have bods with certain features. Women’s stuff has all the best designs.”

IF YOU HAVE TO PICK ONE LOOK YOU ACTUALLY DO REGRET THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER – WHAT WOULD IT BE?
”My high-waist trousers on the cover of Blah Blah Blah, in fact my coiffe too.”

WHAT DO YOU DO IN EVERYDAY LIFE TO HELP PRESERVE THE ENVIRONMENT?
”I try whenever possible to pee on my grounds; that saves flushes!”

SEPTB1-15-IM-Pardeep-Singh-Bahra-GOE

Pardeep Singh Bahra is the founder of Singh Street Style, and a style icon in his own right. He started photographing stylish men when he was 17 years old, and his work has been published in Vogue.

NAME ONE RULE ALL PEOPLE SHOULD BREAK.
”There are no rules! Don't let people tell you how you should or shouldn’t dress.”

TELL US ABOUT YOUR STYLE INSPIRATIONS – ARE THERE ANY RULE BREAKERS YOU ADMIRE?
”I am inspired by anything! It could be mannequins in the store or people walking down the street. My grandfather was also a huge style inspiration. A rule breaker I admire is Kanye West.”

WHEN YOU STARTED YOUR BLOG, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE?
”I wanted to show that Sikh men can be just as stylish and handsome as anyone else. I think we have achieved that!”

AS YOU’VE SHOWED US, THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO TIE AND WEAR A DASTAR. DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE STYLE?
”I tie a Kenyan style, that's my signature style!”

WHAT DO YOU DO IN EVERYDAY LIFE TO HELP PRESERVE THE ENVIRONMENT?
”I make sure I always throw away trash in the bin and never litter!”

SEPTB1-15-IM-Corianna-and-BriannaGOE

Style icons and identical twins Corianna and Brianna are the founders of eyewear brand Coco and Breezy – a celebrity favourite that counts Prince amongst its biggest fans (he wore their “3rd Eye” sunglasses at his SNL performance).

NAME ONE RULE ALL PEOPLE SHOULD BREAK.
”The key to life is to break all the rules and use your greatest potential in everything you do. Don't always go with what you’re told to do – have the mindset of testing it out yourself to find the solution. Staying positive and being fearless will help you break all the rules. Create your own lane!”

DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST FASHION RULE YOU CHALLENGED?
”Back in 2008 before colourful lipstick was popular, we would use coloured eyeshadow and lip gloss to make blue lipstick. Magazines would say it was a fashion no-no but we didn't care. Of course a few years later, those same magazines had it for the new it-trend. We never really go with the rules of fashion… The number one rule is to be comfortable in your skin.”

DID YOU FACE ANY CHALLENGES GROWING UP?
”We faced a lot of challenges having a unique style and growing up in the suburbs in Minnesota. We were blessed to have parents who really supported and pushed us to express ourselves freely through fashion and art. With us looking so different and dressing very eclectically in high school, we would get stared at, made fun of and bullied. We felt so misunderstood and hurt inside, so that is how we found our love for sunglasses. We would wear sunglasses to block our eyes from making eye contact with these people that didn't understand us. We always knew we wanted to be entrepreneurs, so we started designing our own sunglasses and that is how our eyewear company was born. We took us being bullied and created a business out of it. We know that a lot of people can relate to this, and we would just like to share that it's not the end… it's just the start of a new beginning. When you’re bullied for any reason, it's because you’re a visionary and ahead of your time.”

WHAT DO YOU DO IN EVERYDAY LIFE TO HELP PRESERVE THE ENVIRONMENT?
”We recycle, always turning off lights and not using a lot of electricity, we don't eat meat. Also on another level of helping the people in our environment, we speak at a lot of schools to share our story and teach positive thinking. We have spoken at schools such as Princeton, Syracuse, NYU, Columbia and more. We love to share with people the unconventional way of doing things, being happy and do what you love. We should all be dreamers and executers. It's not always easy, but with the right mindset, we can change the world.”
