Karina’s feminine edge
Ultra-chic Editor-In-Chief Karina Somerset styles her current H&M favourites.
As H&M just opened its first store in Kazakhstan, we turn our eyes to Almaty – where some of the street style scene’s most interesting style icons reside. If you know your Eastern fashion scene you’ve probably heard of some of them, if not we suggest you google – you will be rewarded with tons of fresh inspiration.
Adam Katz Sinding, the photographer behind Le 21ème, went to Almaty to capture a few of their style icons. First out: Karina Somerset, the mastermind behind ELLE Kazakhstan and Étage Magazine.
WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
”Understated feminine chic. But I also like I like boys' clothes.”
WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
”Natalya Arinbassarova, a Kazakhstani actress. She is known for her films Pervyy Uchitel (First Teacher, 1965), and Jamilya (1969).”
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER?
”Jacquemus, Celine, Assel (a Kazakh brand).”
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH?
”I guess it would be Jordan: Petra and Wadi Rum are definitely historic places to discover and that have a different, unique energy.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
”My grandma’s homemade Italian pasta.”
IF YOU HAD TO LEAVE YOUR APARTMENT IN A HURRY, WHAT WOULD YOU GRAB?
”This long, beige trench coat from J.W. Anderson.”
It’s a business that creates history and reflects on the present.
KARINA SOMERSET ON WHY FASHION IS IMPORTANT
WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO LOOK?
”An oversize coat from Céline, a vintage bag and flat slippers from H&M.”
WHY IS FASHION IMPORTANT?
”Fashion is not only about collections & accessories, it’s about design, construction, ideas and smart decisions. It’s a business that creates history and reflects the present.”
IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN HISTORY, WHAT FASHION ERA WOULD YOU LIKE TO
”The 1920s, I guess I would like to meet Piet Mondrian, one of the founders of the Dutch modern movement De Stijl. Mondrian reduced his shapes to lines and rectangles to fundamental basics pushing past references towards pure abstraction.”
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD?
”An architect. I was always obsessed with geometrical lines, shapes and angles.”
WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET?
”Right now in this stage of my life I would like to meet Nelson Mandela.”
WHAT DO YOU NEED RIGHT NOW?
”I always want to go to hiking in the mountains, but right now – being busy with ELLE Kazakhstan and Étage magazine, I don’t have enough time.”
WHAT IS YOUR LATEST BEAUTY DISCOVERY?
”I went to Chiang Mai, Thailand as a volunteer at the National Elephant park. It was whole discovery, every day we took care of the elephants, contributed to the healing while learning about their lives past and present. As well as spending time teaching children English and French in primary school. That experience is one of the most beautiful and greatest I’ve ever had.”
