YOUR GUIDE TO FITNESS: AMANDA BISK

New year, new you – right? Starting now, Instagram fitness sensation Amanda Bisk will give you her best workout tips on a weekly basis. But first you need to get off the sofa.

The year is new and so should your approach to working out be. To help you start moving your body, H&M Life has teamed up with one of the most popular women in the digital fitness realm: Amanda Bisk. The 29-year-old Australian is a former professional pole-vaulter who was training for the London Olympics when she was diagnosed with the neurologic disease chronic fatigue in 2011. After being diagnosed she was unable to continue training and had to let go of her Olympic dream.

“I will have to live with chronic fatigue for the rest of my life. Despite that I’ve been very lucky and am now – five years after being diagnosed – once again able to do high intensity training,” she says. “Yoga has been a major factor for my recovery. Every case of chronic fatigue is different and for me yoga helped unlock all the mental things that were going on with me. It helps me today and every single day.”

Despite the grief and pain of seeing a lifelong dream fade away, Amanda Bisk found a new career purpose – and has been working to fulfil it for years. Today she has more than 450,000 followers on Instagram and a workout program that has helped thousands to reach their fitness goals. Hopefully, through her partnership with H&M and H&M Life, her routine will reach millions.

Later this month, the first weekly workout tutorial with Amanda Bisk is going live on H&M Life. The tutorials are short and made to inspire as well as be easy for you to incorporate into your daily life. Before showing you her best exercises, we asked her to tell us how to get motivated to actually want to perform them.

"Growing up I did a lot of different sports that were all high intensity; yoga was completely different. It made me feel every moment and every breath" says Amanda Bisk on her love for yoga.

HEY AMANDA! HOW CAN WE FIND WORKOUT MOTIVATION?
“Make a plan for action! I sit down on Sundays and plan my workout schedule for the week ahead. When the day I’ve scheduled comes, I just have to get up and do it. Also, keep a training diary where you write down what days you’re going to work out, where you’re going to do it, what it felt like afterwards and what exercises you did.”

WHAT’S THE EASIEST AND QUICKEST WAY TO GETTING INTO SHAPE?
“Being fit and healthy takes work and commitment, but the beauty is that we can wake up every day with a desire to keep bettering ourselves and continue working towards something! I mean, how boring would it be if you achieved all of your fitness goals today – what would you do tomorrow?

“Everybody is different and you need to find what exercise and activities you like. It is also important to understand why you want to get fit. What’s the reason? Do you want to lose some kilos, be a good role model to your kids, or maybe run 10 kilometres without stopping? When you find your why, it will give you a greater understanding of the importance of being active and looking after your body and mind.”

WHAT’S YOUR EXERCISE OF CHOICE?
“My background is in athletics and gymnastics, so I love sprinting and other kinds of high intensity training. I also love yoga.”

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOGA?
“I’ve learned that working out isn’t about what your body can physically do – it’s more about connecting your body with your mind. Growing up I did a lot of different sports that were all high intensity; yoga was completely different. It made me feel every moment and every breath.”

IS THERE ANY TYPE OF WORKOUT YOU HATE?
“I’ve tried to do long distance running but I really, really, don’t like it. After five kilometres running, I feel like I’m going to die.”

WHAT WILL BE THE BIG HEALTH AND FITNESS TREND FOR 2016?
“I feel we’re moving into an era of combining and clashing different types of workouts, like ballet and boxing or something crazy like that. I’ve also heard of R’n’B Yoga. I’m hoping we get a little more athletic training on trend as well and that more people get into sprinting and jumping over hurdles. The space is ever-changing and I hope athletics will become big. Maybe even pole-vault!”

LET’S TALK ABOUT FOOD. WHAT’S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?
“I have a sweet tooth and a love for ice cream. Any time, any flavour – I’ll eat it.”

WHAT HAVE YOU EATEN TODAY?
“Poached eggs and avocado on wholegrain toast. It’s a staple. I’m obsessed with dipping cucumber, carrot and celery in guacamole. So I always have veggies at home, and grainy bread and eggs.”

WHAT WOULD YOU NEVER EAT?
“I steer away from anything that’s over processed and not real food.”

This winter and spring Amanda Bisk and Patrick Beach will show their best exercises with step-by-step tutorials and inspirational videos on H&M Life. Stay tuned for their first weekly workout tutorials later this month.
