10 STYLE PERSONALITIES OF NICKI MINAJ

She’s our favourite style shape-shifter: Nicki Minaj loves any opportunity to play dress-up. As the superstar turns 33 on 8 December, we run through ten of her best fashion personalities.

10. HARAJUKU ON THE RED CARPET
The 2011 VMAs were an opportunity for Nicki to go full Harajuku Barbie in a signature candy-coloured beehive, an outrageous metallic peplum dress, huge ice-cream cone necklace and a face-mask – the ideal accessory for anyone trying to go all-out with their weird, wild fashion.

9. THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN BARNET
Totally eschewing any notion of a “natural look”, Nicki went through a major Marge Simpson phase back in 2011. Her giant Bride of Frankenstein wigs, in crazy colours and textures, made sure we all sat up and noticed when she walked into the room.

8. THE GIVENCHY GIRL
She doesn’t get enough credit for being a style chameleon, but Nicki can pull anything off. Check out this moment from the S/S 2016 Givenchy show, when she took a walk on the wild side in an all-over leopard print look and some (relatively) natural hair and makeup – a perfect fit for Riccardo Tisci’s cool crowd.

7. THE RED RIDING HOOD
Taking the idea of a “red” carpet to heart, Nicki went all-out for the 2012 Grammys, wearing a scarlet red Versace cape with hood and embellished skirt, and one key accessory – her date, a man dressed up as the pope. Of course. Never let it be said that Nicki Minaj doesn’t have a creative streak.

6. THE LOVELY LOB
Hopping squarely on the celebrity lob trend, Nicki picked a typical Minaj green – a tonal jade – for her new ‘do. The shape of the style might be a safe, Hollywood-demure choice, but with her outré chic she’s made it into something zany enough to call her own.

5. THE FRONT-ROW FRIENDSHIP
What do you wear to sit front row at a fashion show beside the editor of American Vogue? If you’re Nicki, going to the Carolina Herrera show, you don’t let that faze you. In 2012, she embraced her ice-cream sundae side, with a multicolour embroidered top and a matching tennis skirt in neon orange. Later, Anna sent Nicki a photo of the two of them and wrote, “We match!” underneath.

4. THE H&M HOMAGE
At the 2011 launch of Versace for H&M, we got some peak Nicki style – an ode to the glory days of the Italian fashion house, in an outfit that channelled the Grecian-meets-jungle vibes of classic Versace. Of course, she topped it all off with a curly green wig, to give the look that real Minaj magic.

3. THE PINK FRIDAY
Nicki and pink hair go together like bees and honey, and her gorgeous pink wig in the video for Super Bass – softly crimped like an 1980's Barbie – had many of her fans reaching for the hair dye. She carried the theme through on the cover of her album Pink Friday, where she modelled herself as a living doll, clad head-to-toe in pretty pink.

2. THE FEMME FATALE
For all her costume changes and elaborate hairdos, we shouldn’t forget that Nicki is capable of doing red-carpet glam just as well as any of her chart-topping peers. If you’re unsure, see her sexy, sophisticated black Tom Ford dress for the 2015 Grammys. The sequinned number, with its plunging neckline and high waist, seems made for her, with a kind of Hollywood glam we don’t often see on Nicki.

1. THE MCQUEEN MINAJ
“Bought me Alexander McQueen, he was keepin’ me stylish,” Nicki rapped evocatively onAnaconda as she strutted back and forth, and we’ve never seen the label look quite so cool: a gold and black bustier paired with a printed pencil skirt and some towering strappy heels. Now that’s a good look.
