TOP MODEL SECRETS

ARLENIS SOSA

She’s the face for Lancôme but makes the best beauty products from things she keeps in her pantry. Keep reading to get the recipe for Arlenis Sosa’s body scrub.

Arlenis Sosa was discovered when she was walking down a Santo Domingo street, in her homeland the Dominican Republic. Arlenis was signed and flown to New York, where she landed at fashion’s finest event.

Without speaking a word of English, she was sent to the Met Gala, walking hand in hand with Oscar de la Renta – who later snagged her for both his resort collection and spring fashion show. Saying that Arlenis kick-started her career is almost an understatement, because after appearing at the gala she was featured in both American and Italian Vogue, and a few months later landed a major campaign when she became the face for Lancôme. Now she’s ranked as one of the Money Girls at MODELS.com – thanks to being a favourite at Banana Republic, Ann Taylor and of course H&M.

Despite all her success on the runway and in front of the camera, Arlenis stays grounded and dreams of pursuing a career as a chef. Her favourite creative outlet – cooking – is evident in her skin and hair routine too; they involve mixing honey, brown sugar and a few other pantry staples.

MY FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHER IS…
“Alexi Lubomirski.”

I AM MOST PROUD OF…
“How I've grown as a human and how I've learned to appreciate everything around me. I know now to take advantage of what life brings no matter, but receive everything with a positive attitude.”

MOST MEMORABLE SHOW WAS…
“Oscar de la Renta Spring/Summer 2008 when I had the opportunity to open and close the show. I will miss Oscar very much.”

MY CREATIVE OUTLET IS…
“Cooking!”

MY MODEL ICON IS…
“Liya Kebede.”

MY BEAUTY SECRET IS…
“Something I learned from my mother's skincare routine: homemade scrub made of honey, oats and brown sugar mixed together. Rubbing it against your skin for five minutes will leave it clean and soft like a baby.”

I KEEP IN SHAPE BY…
“Doing Pilates, SLT [a workout routine meaning strengthen, lengthen, tone], cycling with SoulCycle and boxing.”

FOR A QUICK HAIR FIX…
“I wear my homemade avocado treatment, leaving my hair healthy and shiny.”

MY DE-STRESS TRICKS ARE…
“Laughing, cooking and going to my favourite bathhouse for a massage. It has hot and salty pools to help detox and heal the body.”

MY SECRET TALENT IS…
“That I can make beautiful meals by cooking something that I love.”

I SMELL LIKE…
“Daisy, which is my favourite fragrance.”

MY FAVOURITE OFF-DUTY LOOK IS…
“A pair of jeans, sneakers, a simple tank top and leather jacket.”

MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IS…
“I love sushi, so one of my favourite places is Blue Ribbon in New York.”

FOR BREAKFAST I ALWAYS HAVE…
“Oatmeal with banana or eggs with an avocado toast. It depends on which one I am in the mood for!”

FOR A LONG FLIGHT, I ALWAYS PACK…
“My compression tights/socks, vitamins, skincare creams, jeans, sneakers, a sweater, and a jacket (depending on the weather).”

WHEN I HAVE SOME FREE TIME, I…
“Love hanging out with my family, watch movies, or get active.”

THE BEST ADVICE I RECEIVED WAS…
“Don't forget who you are, your discipline, education and the way you manage everything will always be part of your true self. This was from my dearest dad.”

MY FAVOURITE THINGS TO SHOP FOR WHEN I AM AWAY ARE…
“Chocolate, cookies, cheese...I love them all!!! :)”

BEING A MODEL, I’VE LEARNT…
“As a model, I've had the opportunity to travel all over the world and meet so many different kinds of people. The experience has really taught me a lot about different cultures and given me a real world experience that I would not have been able to get if I hadn't become a model.”

POST-MODELLING, I WOULD LIKE TO…
“Do many things. I am very interested in going to culinary school and maybe opening a restaurant, as well as exploring different business ventures that I have already started to get into now.”

MY FAVOURITE SHOW RIGHT NOW IS…
Suits.“

RIGHT NOW I AM READING…
The Promise Of A Pencil by Adam Braun.”

MY GOAL IN LIFE IS…
“To always be happy no matter how successful or not I am, and learn about what every day can bring to my life. I am engaged now, and my fiancé and I are becoming a family – that's what is most important to me. My family and both of us can't wait for our wedding so we can build a beautiful future together... and one day become an even bigger family.

As I keep up with my usual work, I see myself having my own business in the future, going to school and becoming a businesswoman, which I am already working on. Going to culinary school is an important step to me so that's one of the things that I would be focusing on after the big day!”
