Moments that changed streetstyle
We’ve watched street style unfold online over the years, capturing fashion’s peacocks and most stylish civilians. These are the ten moments that defined and changed street style as we know it.
10. KANYE WEST TAKES PARIS FASHION WEEK
Kanye’s ascent to the top of the fashion ladder has been a difficult one, and when he took to Paris Fashion Week in 2009, he received admiration and derision in equal measure. His colourful peacock style may have been controversial, but it certainly turned heads and helped him build a reputation as a real fashion insider.
9. THE NEW ACCESSORIES
In the colourful melee that is fashion week, few things really stand out. But intricately-designed, imaginative accessories have become surefire fodder for the photographer’s camera and fuelled the craze for must-have shoes, bags, hats, you name it!
With its roots in online forums like StyleForum and SuperFuture, #menswear (that’s ‘hashtag menswear’) popped up on blogs around 2011, seeing some very stylish men express themselves in fine Italian tailoring and niche Japanese brands. The modern-day dandy never looked so good.
7. JAMEL SHABAZZ
The photographer from Brooklyn was crucial in documenting the hip hop scene in 1980s NYC. His book of images, Back in the Days, tells a story of a cultural movement unfolding in the heart of Brooklyn as well as the amazing fashion that came from within it.
6. THE OFF-DUTY MODELS
They’re usually noted for what they wear on the catwalk, but with the rise of fashion week photography, models started attracting attention for their off-duty outfits. Posing for photos outside shows allows models to show a little more personality than usual, too, placing them firmly at the centre of the fashion week circus.
5. ANNA DELLO RUSSO
Already an accomplished editor in her own right, ADR became a household name thanks to her OTT fashion week style, with plenty of outfit changes and often full looks taken directly from the catwalk. The blogs lapped it up, and she became one of street style’s brightest stars.
4. THE OLSEN TWINS COME OF AGE
It’s hard to imagine a time before the Olsen twins’ every move was documented by the fashion paparazzi, but after their move to NYC in 2004, their NYC boho-deluxe look started another trend: making off-duty celebrities the new style stars.
3. THE VOGUE PARIS TEAM
The chic, refined style of French fashion editors Carine Roitfeld and Emmanuelle Alt became a familiar sight at fashion weeks, inspiring legions of fans to don the skinniest black jeans, the highest of heels, mannish shirts and those dramatic Balmain jackets in tribute.
2. HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON
The original and one of the best, Cartier-Bresson walked the streets of Paris and beyond to document stylish citizens and catch them off-guard. The result was the birth of street photography as we know it, and he has influenced many street style photographers in the years since.
1. THE BLOGGERS WHO CHANGED EVERYTHING
The likes of Scott Schuman and Tommy Ton have become celebrities in their own right, despite residing behind the lens at fashion weeks around the world. Their excellent vision means they’ve come to shape how we see fashion off the runway and in the ‘real’ world – though how real that world may be is still up for debate!
