THE 10 BIGGEST FASHION STORIES OF 2015
What a year it has been for the fashion world! Packed with scandal, celebrity and, of course, plenty of beautiful clothes, we count down the ten biggest fashion stories of 2015.
10. THE RISE OF THE CRUISE SHOW
Not satisfied with the twice-yearly global parade of fashion weeks, some of the biggest brands have taken to jetting the fashion elite to far-flung destinations for cruise shows. This year, Louis Vuitton landed at Bob Hope’s desert home in Palm Springs, while Chanel, determined not to be outdone, zoomed off to Seoul for a South Korean sojourn.
9. TAYLOR SWIFT’S FASHION SQUAD
It was like the party that never ended. From May until December, almost every night on her 1989 tour, Taylor Swift brought out another friend to sing, dance and pose on stage with her. There were some very fashionable faces in there, such as Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss and Kendall Jenner, proving the power of Taylor’s stylish girl gang.
8. THE UNORTHODOX MODEL
There has never been a better time to be unconventionally good-looking. While some catwalks still have a way to go to catch up with ethnic diversity, the industry’s championing of unusual beauties like Binx Walton, Ondria Hardin and Issa Lish shows that top models can come in many different packages.
7. THE NEW GUCCI
Appointing an unknown name to head up Gucci may have been a controversial decision, but Alessandro Michele’s reign at the label has given us a beautiful new kind of Italian cool: a smart, romantic vision of men and women who revel in their eccentricities.
6. RIHANNA DOES THE MET GALA
You can always count on Rihanna to turn heads with her fashion choices, particularly on the red carpet. So it was a delight to see her at the Met Gala in May, wearing a yellow gown with long, fluffy train, by Chinese couturier Guo Pei. The internet loved it, too, comparing the dress to Big Bird and an extra-large slice of cheese pizza.
5. THE RISE OF THE HADIDS
Who can knock the Delevingne-Jenner double act off the top of the fashion charts? In 2015, we learned the answer: Gigi and Bella Hadid, the LA sisters responsible for bringing wholesome, sexy glamour back into the style spotlight. They modelled together on the Tom Ford runway and nabbed magazine covers thanks to their glossy Californian good looks.
4. THE TRANS TIPPING POINT AND CAITLYN JENNER
It was undoubtedly the year that trans models started to get the recognition that they deserve. Hari Nef and Andreja Pejic, both transgender women, landed some big-name jobs on the runway and in ad campaigns, while Caitlyn Jenner’s debut on the cover of Vanity Fair proved to be a “break the internet” moment of her own.
3. RAF SIMONS LEAVES DIOR
It was one in a string of shock departures by top designers, but Raf Simons leaving Dior brought a tear to many a fashion fan’s eye. In his three and a half years at the Parisian house, Simons brought intellect and emotion to the table, redefining feminine fashion and making Jennifer Lawrence the elegant, youthful face of the storied label along the way.
2. YEEZY SEASON APPROACHIN’
How long have we waited for Kanye West to make his next move in the fashion world? The day finally came in February, when he debuted his Autumn/Winter collection for Adidas. The first collection of androgynous pieces in neutral tones was followed up with a second at New York Fashion Week in September, and the first pieces sold out when they hit the shops in October.
It’s been the talk of the town this year – H&M’s latest designer collaboration with Balmain has been a star-studded, well-dressed affair, complete with Kendall Jenner dancing in the accompanying music video (with cameos from creative director Olivier Rousteing!) in a wardrobe of embellished, glitzy, sexy and strong pieces.
