Beauty myths busted

We all like straight facts, especially when it comes to beauty. So why are some beauty myths still lingering on? Let’s bust them.

  1. ”NIGHT CREAMS ARE FOR NIGHT TIME ONLY”

    FALSE. There are only two main differences between a day cream and a night cream. The day cream version should contain a good dosage of SPF, and the formula is usually thinner and smoother than the one labelled night cream. This is because during the day you most likely do not want to appear greasy and you may also want your makeup to remain on your face.
    The common belief that the skin has different needs at night and that the skin heals itself during our sleep is not true. The skin repairs itself no more at night than during the day. An improvement of, say, a blemish or a reddish mark may be more visible in the morning. But that is more due to the passing of time rather than the magic of a specific night cream. 

  2. ”YOUR SKIN GETS USED TO CERTAIN PRODUCTS AND THEN THEY STOP WORKING EFFICIENTLY”

    FALSE. You know some foods are actually good for your health and body. Like an apple or a handful of nuts. The health benefits of these foods do not stop, your body does not ”get used to them” and fail to derive the benefits. It is the same with your skin. Give your skin some healthy boosts of good skincare such as vitamins and anti-oxidants and your skin will remain healthy. At least it will not get used to these good ingredients and stop being healthy. 

  3. ”DAMAGED HAIR CAN BE REPAIRED WITH THE RIGHT PRODUCTS”

    FALSE. Sadly no. The only way to get rid of split ends is to cut them off. Sorry. Bleached hair cannot be unbleached and regain its original state. You can, however, give your hair the appearance of being smoother and healthier using the right, good hair products. However, that is merely a temporary, superficial solution. 

  4. ”TOOTHPASTE IS A GOOD WAY TO GET RID OF BLEMISHES”

    FALSE. No pointing fingers here, we are all looking for a cheap and easy way to get rid of those pesky zits. However, toothpaste is not the way, regardless of what you have heard. There is some truth to it: the menthol can reduce the redness caused by inflammation. But it is not worth it, the other ingredients in toothpaste are much too harsh on the skin and are more likely to cause further irritation. 

  5. ”SHAVING CAUSES THE HAIR TO GROW BACK THICKER”

    FALSE. When new hair grows, it looks (and feels) both coarser and thicker. That is because when you shave, you cut the hair at its base where it is the widest. So yes, it feels coarser but it is not the shaving’s fault. Shaving does not change the thickness of the hair.
