AMY WINEHOUSE’S BEST PERFORMANCES
Amy Winehouse was no fashion icon, but she sure had style. In connection with the premiere of the documentary Amy, we remember the artist by listing her best performances.
8. STRONGER THAN ME, LIVE IN 2003
This was before the beehive, the heavy eyeliner and the mini-dresses. Amy Winehouse had just released her debut album Frank and did one of her first big television appearances. She had just turned 20 and her career was about to skyrocket.
7. REHAB/TEARS DRY ON THEIR OWN, LIVE IN
Back To Black was her second and breakthrough album, released in 2006. It was around the time of the release of the album that she adopted her signature style – inspired by the 60’s group The Ronettes. Here, she performs two of her biggest hits in a perfect way.
6. NELSON MANDELA’S 90TH BIRTHDAY, 2008
This performance may not be her best technically, but the setting – a packed Hyde Park and Nelson Mandela on front row – made it one of her most memorable live performances.
5. DUET WITH TONY BENNETT, 2011
Amy Winehouse teamed up with the American jazz legend for his album Duets II, released in 2011. This was the last time she recorded in the studio – and the song was released a few months after her tragic death. The duo went on to win a Grammy.
4. BACK TO BLACK, LIVE IN CAMDEN 2007
Back to Black is one of Amy Winehouse’s most played – and perhaps loved – songs. In 2007, she gave one of her best performances ever and mixed in the lyrics from Shangri-Las Remember (Walking in the Sand).
3. BACK TO BLACK (UNPLUGGED), SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST
In this acoustic performance of Back to Black, she silenced the critics who had focused on her lifestyle and image instead of her music and talent. In this performance Amy Winehouse demonstrates just why she would go on to become a legend.
2. REHAB, ON LETTERMAN 2007
The singer made her debut on American television in a polka dot dress and one blonde highlight in her signature hairdo. Although she was already well established in Europe, this performance introduced her to the American audience in a big way – and paved the way to superstardom.
1. YOU KNOW I’M NO GOOD/REHAB, THE GRAMMYS
2008 was the year of Amy Winehouse, at least career-wise. The night of the Grammys, she won five awards and delivered this flawless performance. Due to visa problems, she wasn’t allowed to perform in America – so Grammy broadcaster CBS set up a stage in London.
