FRENCH STYLE SECRETS FROM THREE PARIS MUSES

FRENCH STYLE SECRETS FROM THREE PARIS MUSES

The stars of the new ‘Bonjour Paris’ H&M collection share their best styling tips for summer.

'Bonjour Paris' H&M is a limited-edition collection, full of French, contemporary classics, made to celebrate the re-opening of H&M’s flagship store in Paris. Luckily for us non-Parisiennes, the collection will be made available worldwide online from 20 June.

Starring in the campaign are three French actresses, who all are making waves both on the fashion and cinema scene: Karidja Touré, Alice Isaaz and Marie-Ange Casta.

Read on to learn their French girl fashion secrets and how they style the must-haves from the Bonjour Paris H&M collection.

KARIDJA TOURÉ: ”I LOVE PLAYING WITH DIFFERENT STYLES”

With Girlhood (Bande des Filles), directed by Céline Sciamma, Karidja Touré and her fellow cast members broke new ground in French cinema. The film also earned Karidja Touré her big acting break – which led to her current status as a Paris Fashion Week darling. We caught up with Karidja just as she got back from the Cannes festival, where she continued to challenge French film conventions.

”I was there promoting a book called Noir N'est Pas Mon Métier (Black Is Not My Profession), which I wrote together with 15 other black French actresses.

We talk about the difficulties of being a French black actress in France and all the stereotypes we meet in the cinema industry.”

WHAT ACTING DREAMS ARE ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
”I would love to play a Marvel hero or be in a musical comedy! I love when I have to exercise or learn something new for a character.”

DESCRIBE ‘FRENCH STYLE’ IN 3 WORDS?
”Chic! Relaxed! Modern!”

HAVE YOUR ALWAYS BEEN INTO FASHION?
”Yes, thanks to my mum and my dad. My dad was a fashion designer, so I saw a lot of wax fabrics growing up – my mum was always asking for African dresses in colourful patterns. That helped me a lot to find my style in terms of colour. I love to play with different styles when I’m travelling, or changing my haircut!”

GIVE US YOUR VERSION OF A PERFECT PARIS DAY?
”Having ice cream on a terrace, walking around in the sun in Montmartre.”

HOW WILL YOU WEAR YOUR FAVOURITE ‘BONJOUR PARIS H&M’ PIECE THIS SUMMER?
”My favourite piece is a pair of flared, high-waisted jeans and I’ll style it with a white crop top and a stiletto sandal.”

ALICE ISAAZ: ”IT’S A BALANCE BETWEEN ELEGANCE AND NONCHALANCE”

Alice Isaaz dreamt of becoming a dancer as a young girl, and at some point, even a doctor. Acting wasn’t really on her mind – or at least she didn’t use to think so.

”While I was sorting stuff at my parents’ house I found a letter I wrote when I was a kid, answering to a casting ad in a TV magazine. It was never sent, but the idea of becoming an actress was already there I guess.”

Alice Isaaz has had a busy year. She stars in the upcoming Mademoiselle de Jonquières, premiering in September, and recently wrapped two other films, out next year.

WHAT’S THE MOST ‘FRENCH’ THING IN YOUR WARDROBE?
”Probably my marinière, my sailor’s jumper. And my [Parisian label] Admise suit!”

DESCRIBE ‘FRENCH STYLE’ IN THREE WORDS?
”For me, it’s a balance between elegance and nonchalance. And always being natural and discreet.”

YOUR SISTER LAURA IS A FASHION EDITOR AT FRENCH ELLE. DOES SHE GIVE YOU STYLE ADVICE?
”She is the first person I ask when it comes to finding an outfit for an event. She always gives excellent advice. Luckily, we have the same taste in fashion, so we share wardrobes systematically. Sometimes when I see my sister wearing my pieces, I rediscover them. It helps seeing your wardrobe and forgotten pieces in a new light!”

HOW WILL YOU STYLE YOUR FAVOURITE ‘BONJOUR PARIS H&M’ PIECE THIS SUMMER?
”The boyfriend blazer is an essential piece, a real must-have that every woman should have in their wardrobe. It could be worn with a pair of denim trousers, a t-shirt and sneakers, or with a pair of chic, pleated trousers and a pretty pair of high heels. As I will spend all summer in Biarritz where the evenings can be chilly, it is definitely the one piece that I’ll bring! I also have a real crush on the viscose black dress, so chic!”

MARIE-ANGE CASTA: ”FRENCH WOMEN ARE MORE FREE”

Paris’ chicest mom, Marie-Ange Casta, spends ”every single free minute” with her daughter. Working hours, she juggles acting, modelling and writing a documentary. A Paris native, Casta moved to Corsica at age 13, where she spent her early teens before returning to Paris.

”Living on an island I didn’t have the same access to current fashion as a Parisian girl – perhaps that forced me to be more creative and find my own, personal style.”

DESCRIBE ‘FRENCH STYLE’ IN THREE WORDS?
”Simple. Casual. Free.”

YOU LIVED IN CORSICA FOR A WHILE. HOW DID CORSICA – COMPARED TO PARIS – INFLUENCE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
"Maybe the fact that living on an Island, not having the same access to fashion as a Parisian girl, forced me to create my own personal style and to be more creative."

GIVE US YOUR BEST ‘FRENCH GIRL’ STYLING TRICK!
”No makeup but good accessories.”

WHAT’S FALSE AND WHAT’S TRUE ABOUT FRENCH WOMEN?
”It’s a myth that French girls get ready in five minutes, and that we randomly choose our clothes. We’re very meticulous about every single detail. But I do think that French women are more free when it comes to style than other women, and that’s because we don’t spend a lot of time on hair and makeup in the bathroom. At least in my case!”

HOW WILL YOU WEAR YOUR FAVOURITE ‘BONJOUR PARIS H&M’ PIECE?
”I really love the red floral dress that I wear in the campaign. It’s perfect for summer, and I will wear it with flat sandals, red lips, and messy hair, blowing in the Corsican winds.”
