Heralding a new era in anti-minimalist yet chic, ultra glamorous interiors, Milan-based Dimore Studio is the design company of the moment and a firm fashion favourite. Find out why below.
If you had to name the hottest design studio in the world right now, who would it be?
Dimore Studio, hands down. Based in Milan, this design company has worked with fashion brands such as Hermès, Bottega Veneta, Fendi and Sonia Rykiel to famous hoteliers such as Ian Schrager and Thierry Costes. In Italian, “dimore” means dwellings, and the studio specialises in bringing together contradictory elements to their interiors projects. Think 18th-century French furniture with 1970s lamps. Dark, moody colours mingling with hits of brass or gold. Or, in the studio founders’ words:
“It's a mix of old and new, traditional and contemporary, a mix of styles that creates a timeless space. Dimore Studio’s creative atmosphere is dedicated to finding a harmonious balance amongst design, art, and architecture. We create spaces that are warm, inviting, functional and memorable, giving them an immediate sense of harmony.”
So who are the brains behind this fabulous operation?
Britt Moran and Emiliano Salci founded Dimore in 2003. Moran is American, but fell in love with Italy while visiting as a student and so stayed, becoming a graphic designer. Salci grew up in Tuscany and trained to be a furniture designer. The two met on a project, and the rest is history. Moran remembers the first time they met, fondly:
“We met for a lobby project for a hotel in Shanghai. In the end, the project did not happen but we became conscious of our artistic complicity. We work really well together. We complete each other. Emiliano is more artistic and I am more business oriented, but this is fundamental to maintain our balance.”
Aren’t they the ones responsible for Ceresio 7, that poolside restaurant above the DSquared2 showroom in Milan? The one with the peacock blue chairs and funky chandeliers?
Why, yes, plus Caffè Burlot in Paris, countless boutiques around the world, and several private residences. Dimore Studio also launched their own furniture line in 2005. But one project in particular stands out: the Pump Room in Chicago. “We were really happy to work with an entrepreneur like Ian Schrager and Chicago is a fantastic city to work in, so inspiring and artistic.” But ultimately, why are people so drawn to Dimore? Says Moran:
“Everyone wants to dream at home, in a hotel, at a restaurant, and to be transported momentarily somewhere else.“
