TOP BEAUTY STORIES OF 2015
It’s been a bumper year in the world of beauty – a whirlwind of new trends, new products, new celebrity crazes – so read on for our round-up of the ten best beauty stories of 2015.
Getting glowy, healthy, radiant skin isn’t just a question of eating your greens and drinking lots of water. Strobing with a good highlighter is the key to a dewy look. Inspired by glossy celebs on the red carpet, strobing has gone from the preserve of professional makeup artists to something almost anyone can master at home.
9. THE MAN BRAID
Thanks to the likes of Jared Leto, it looks like the man braid – following on from the Man Bun he popularised in 2014 – has caught on. It may be a functional and chic way to wear your hair, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t require a little TLC: think clean, soft, sleek hair, gentlemen.
8. INSTAGRAM BODY POSITIVITY
Social media is responsible for many trends, but one of the most positive is the rise of the unapologetic selfie, celebrating a wider range of sizes and shapes. Blogger Nadia Aboulhosn, who wears a UK size 16, is one of the women encouraging confidence and self-love online, inspiring her 320,000 followers with every beautiful selfie.
7. BLEACH BLONDE CELEBRITIES
Proof that going platinum blonde is still the quickest way to cause a stir came twice this year: first when Kim Kardashian reached for the bleach during Paris Fashion Week in March, then in September, when Justin Bieber did the same. For Kim it was a short-lived affair but Justin shows no signs of shedding his blonde look just yet.
6. THE SOUTH KOREAN SKINCARE EXPLOSION
Forget about three-step systems and French pharmacy brands – in 2015, it’s all about the 12-step Korean skincare regimen, inspired by K-Drama actresses such as Ji Won Ha and their luminous skin. Now SoKo brands are exporting around the world and products like bounce creams, essences and ampoules are finding space in global beauty cabinets.
5. GETTING THE KYLIE JENNER POUT
In May she confirmed what many of us had long suspected – Kylie Jenner revealed her much-envied pout has, in fact, had a little help in the form of plumping fillers. That didn’t stop many fans going heavy on the lip liner themselves in an attempt to get a little of the Jenner look.
4. SHEET MASK SELFIES
Another East Asian trend to go global is the sheet mask, and the abundance of affordable yet luxurious sheet masks has led to a bounty of slightly spooky Instagram images of them in use – Lena Dunham and Lady Gaga are two fans who snapped some sheeted selfies.
3. CRAZY CATWALK LOOKS
Call it the Isamaya Ffrench effect – the rise of the wickedly creative makeup artist has seen fashion flex its beauty muscles, trying out ever more extreme experiments on the runway. Try it at home with some face paints, but be prepared to make a good old-fashioned mess along the way.
2. H&M’S BEAUTY LINE LAUNCHES
This year saw makeup bags and beauty cabinets get a little bit fuller, as H&M launched their 700-piece beauty line. A super versatile range of everything from primer to powder, as well as fragrance, hair and bodycare, has got us all experimenting with new colours and finding new favourites that will last into 2016 and beyond.
1. THE KARDASHIAN KONTOUR
It has become the defining look of our modern times: the airbrushed contoured face, where a collection of different products work together to highlight your face’s best angles. Kim Kardashian’s look, which may be the one that really triggered the trend, apparently features 50 steps – all it takes to turn anyone into a Kardashian Klone.
