Summer shades with Grasie Mercedes
Take a cue from this LA-based actress and blogger and go bright and bold this season.
When feeling a little down and blue, Grasie Mercedes’ Instagram feed is the place we go. Los Angeles sunshine, cute dogs, chic getaways, and of course, Grasie’s signature style – a mix of bright colours, flirty dresses and cool everyday staples – always seems to lift our spirits. We asked this super chic lifestyle blogger slash actress to select her current H&M favourites and to share some of her styling secrets.
WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
”Zoe Saldana. I’m also an actress and we have a similar frame, skin tone and we’re both Dominican! So sometimes I see her on the carpet and feel like I’m looking in a mirror. (A much richer, more famous mirror – lol). I see her ensembles and frequently think to myself “I would totally wear that!” She takes risks on the red carpet which I LOVE and almost never gets it wrong.”
WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
”My signature style is fun, hip, cool. I love prints and bright, bold colours and I’m not afraid to incorporate trends. But, I also never wear a trend just because it’s a trend.”
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER?
”This is a tough question because it really depends on what I’m looking for, but some of my favourites are Heidi Merrick, Sandro, Mara Hoffman and classics like Chanel and Gucci. But honestly, I mostly shop at chain stores and only look to these designers when I want to splurge on something really special or need inspiration.”
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH?
”My bed. Seriously. I love travelling and visiting new places around the world but there is nothing more comforting than coming home to my bed, my dog and my husband.”
What you wear can affect your mood, confidence and personality
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
”SO.MANY.THINGS. I love to eat and I eat out a lot! There are few things I won’t eat and trying new restaurants is one of my favourite hobbies. But if I HAD to pick a favourite food, it would be my mum’s rice and beans with sautéed chicken and avocado. YUM! Or a slice of pepperoni Sicilian pizza from Prince’s Pizza in NYC or fish tacos from El Carmen or anything at Osteria Mozza in LA...ok, I’ll stop now but I can keep going.”
WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO LOOK?
”I’m a laid-back dresser so you can mostly find me in jeans, a fun top, great boots, sneakers or heels and a cool bag. It’s all in the details and fit for me. I like wearing mostly simple pieces then one or two standout or statement piece(s) to go with it. So, if I’m wearing a bold floral top, I’ll keep my jeans and shoes classic.”
WHY IS FASHION IMPORTANT?
”Fashion is important because it’s a form of expression and a way to stand out as an individual. What you wear can affect your mood, confidence and personality, and I think that’s powerful.”
IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN HISTORY, WHAT FASHION ERA WOULD YOU LIKE TO
”It’s a toss between the 80s and the 50s! I was a kid in the 80s, so I got a little taste of it but I would have loved to be an adult then because I do love its fashion. Even the over-the-top stuff like acid wash and the giant trousers, though I love it most for its bold colours and shoulder pads. On the flip side, I adore the polish and sophistication of 50s fashion. High-waisted skirts, cropped trousers and fitted tops. Luckily these styles are relevant today and I definitely wear outfits that are inspired by both decades.”
WHAT ITEM WOULD YOU NEVER PART FROM?
”I have a pair of brown and black lace-up boots that I’ve had for over 10 years and I refuse to get rid of them. I was told they are ‘old school’ riding boots though they look more like understated combat boots. They are perfectly worn and my favourite! To be honest, I rarely wear them now but sometimes they are the perfect compliment to a look and that’s why I love them.”
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD?
”I wanted to be a lot of things. I remember wanting to be a lawyer, then a businesswoman, then a reporter, a dancer and always an actress. I’m finally working as an actress in addition to blogging. I have not done any of those other things, but hey, you never know! I believe it’s never too late to try something new, so I may just get my law degree when I’m 60!”
WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY FASHION PLEASURE?
”Denim jackets. I currently have about 10 denim jackets, which is totally ridiculous. You only really need one, three tops. But I have 10 and to me they each have their purpose.”
WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET?
”I want to sit down with Meryl Streep, Viola Davis and Cate Blanchett and have them tell me all their acting secrets! Pick their brains on their process and their journeys. They are incredibly talented actresses (duh) and I hope to be half as good as any of them one day.”
WHAT DO YOU NEED RIGHT NOW?
”A margarita. Does that count?”
WHAT IS YOUR LATEST BEAUTY DISCOVERY?
”Clarins lip balm. It’s incredible! It’s the perfect moisturiser for your lips, which is important for me since I love wearing lipstick so much. You can’t have chapped or dry lips and wear a colour on them, it’s not cute.”
