#51: THE WEEK IN REVIEW
With one week left of 2015, we give you one last weekly roundup before the new year starts. Read on for news about Kendall Jenner, Derek Zoolander and the most Googled designer of the year.
THE FASHION SCHEDULE MIGHT BE CHANGING
On Monday the CFDA (council of fashion designers of America) dropped some big news. They are rethinking the fashion week format from an event for insiders to a more commercially driven event where the clothes shown on the runways are the ones heading for stores. Already, Proenza Schouler, Rebecca Minkhoff and The Row are planning to do this – which Céline has been successful with in Paris. It does make more sense.
KENDALL AND GIGI – MODEL SCOUTS
Although Americas Next Top Model is gone (but not soon forgotten) its spirit lives on, especially in two very popular models. This week, the story about how Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid scouted a homeless skateboarder living on the beach surfaced. The two best friends were shooting on Venice Beach in L.A. when they spotted the handsome 20-year-old John Economou who was sitting by himself, just looking at the water. In an interview with The Daily Mail he recalls how one of the girls (at first he didn’t know who they were) told him he was cute and should take up modelling. The girls then set him up with agency Two Management, that signed the 20-year-old right away. See photos of Kendall and Gigi’s discovery here.
THE MOST GOOGLED DESIGNER OF 2015
It wasn’t Karl Lagerfeld, Donatella Versace or even Instagram star and H&M collaborator Olivier Rousteing. The designer name most of us searched for during this year was – quite surprisingly – Raf Simons, although he has accomplished quite a lot. His longstanding collaboration with Adidas continued, the documentary Dior and I had its big premiere, and he made big headlines when he left his job at Dior. Other designers on the Google 2015 trend report were Tommy Hilfiger and Karl Lagerfeld, to name two.
DEREK ZOOLANDER IS MARIO TESTINO’S 100th TOWEL MODEL
Photographer Mario Testino has shot 100 celebrities and models for the format Towel Series that he posts on his Instagram. For the past two years stars like Kristen Stewart, Naomi Campbell and Anna Wintour have been featured, and this week he celebrated the jubilee by uploading a picture of a “ridiculously handsome” Derek Zoolander. Zoolander, played by Ben Stiller, gave us his signature Magnum (or was it Blue Steel?) pose, while wearing white terry cloth.
JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT AT STAR WARS
On Wednesday the unbelievably anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiered at cinemas around the world. At the gala premiere in Los Angeles on Monday a long list of celebrities arrived wearing designer garbs and well-ironed suits – but none of them stood a chance at winning the red carpet as actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt showed up in a very homemade Yoda costume. With green pyjamas, a white robe and a painted face, the 34-year-old got the crowd cheering (and asking for selfies).
