The Quann sisters’ Coachella survival guide
Artists, writers, street style stars, hair icons. We stalked our favourite twin sisters to find out how to make the most out of fashion’s favourite festival.
Two hundred kilometres east of Los Angeles, on a transformed polo field in the middle of the desert, the biggest festival in the United States – and the most influential in the world – is taking place during two weekends in April. Out on the wide grass lawns, a hundred thousand people are battling the heat and gazing sunlight, all the while sporting the latest fashion and beauty trends. Despite what you may have heard, three days at Coachella isn’t all flower crowns and sunglasses-wearing-emojis – it demands a lot of preparation (and wardrobe planning). That’s why we thought you’d need a spirit guide (or two) to turn to.
Since it’s hard to find wi-fi and your mobile service will be irregular, it’s easy to lose track of your friends while roaming the festival grounds. Lucky for us, we tapped the impossibly cool twins Cipriana and TK Quann, whose majestic hair (grown from scalp since 14 years), tall statures, and stunning style stand out in any crowd. Photographers Michael Dumler and Shawn Hanna followed them around Coachella on a very hot day during weekend one.
Here’s what we learnt from Cipriana and TK Quann.
WHAT TO PACK
C & TK: “It’s absolutely essential to bring a battery charger, a mini-fan, water – and a positive attitude. Also some really comfortable shoes, a chapstick, loose-fitting flowy clothing, and, of course, sunglasses.”
WHAT TO WEAR
TK: “I love to wear off-the-shoulder dresses and blouses. And fringes!”
C: “I often describe my signature style as looking like I’m about to go to the beach but not really. Do you get it? Think cool, flowy bohemian pieces, bikini tops and slip-on shoes.”
DO YOU HAVE A FESTIVAL STYLE MUSE?
C: “If I could pick anyone it would be Lisa Bonet.”
TK: “For me it’s Solange meets Aaliyah, haha. Definitely more Solange.”
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU’D NEVER BE CAUGHT WEARING AT COACHELLA?
TK: “Leather, just because you know, it’s 32 degrees out.”
C: “I wouldn’t put on a bodycon dress here.”
HOW TO DO FESTIVAL BEAUTY
C: “Stay hydrated at all times, use a waterproof mascara to make sure it’s intact in the heat, and use a hydrating lip gloss. Keeping the hair in check is actually very easy, I keep it in a twist so it doesn’t tangle, and use some scarves to keep it away from my face”
TK: “I like to keep it simple but have a bold lip.”
WHAT TO SEE
C: “The people – I love looking at people’s forms of expression and style. And of course all your favourite artists. For me it’s The Glass Animals, Radiohead, and Bon Iver.”
TK: “I’m most excited to see Sampha, Kendrick Lamar, Little Dragon and Banks.”
WHAT PARTIES TO ATTEND
TK: “For us Coachella is the party, so we like to spend our time at the festival area and see shows, then go to our hotel and rest.”
