1. LOULOU DE LA FALAISE'S WEDDING TO THADÉE KLOSSOWSKI DE ROLA ON 11 JUNE, 1977
Yves Saint Laurent’s muse Loulou de la Falaise’s wedding was possibly the most magical ever. Wearing a blue outfit with stars, Loulou told friends she wanted to look like a summer's night sky in Marrakech.

2. BLACK AND WHITE BALL, 28 NOVEMBER, 1966
In 1966, writer Truman Capote threw a party in honour of The Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham. Inspired by the Ascot scene in the film My Fair Lady, the guests wore only white or black.

3. BALL IN THE WINTER PALACE, 11 AND 13 FEBRUARY 1903
The last grand ball of the Russian empire was held on 11 and 13 February 1903 and all the guests wore fancy dress on a 17th Century theme. There was dining, dancing and even an opera concert.

4. KATE MOSS’S 30TH BIRTHDAY PARTY, 16 JANUARY 2004
If anyone knows how to throw a party, it’s Kate Moss. Her 30th birthday party didn’t disappoint. The theme was “The Beautiful and the Damned” and among the guests: Grace Jones, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ronnie Wood.

5. HARLEM RENAISSANCE, 1930s
The cultural movement known as the Harlem Renaissance was the cool cat alternative (and original) to the Jazz Age. At fabulous dances at the Savoy, the best jazz musicians looked out over the most modern crowd the world had seen.

6. BIANCA JAGGER’S BIRTHDAY PARTY AT STUDIO 54, 2 MAY 1977
Anything at Studio 54 was stylish, but top bill goes to Bianca Jagger’s birthday party. Arriving on horseback, led by two nude men, the night was the disco era’s most glamorous moment.

7. VOGUE PARIS 90 YEAR ANNIVERSARY EYES WIDE SHUT BALL, 30 SEPTEMBER 2010
Just before quitting her job as editor of Vogue Paris, Carine Roitfeld threw a masked ball in celebration of the magazine’s first 90 years. Probably the most model-dense party ever, Gisele, Lara Stone, Karolina Kurkova, Natalia Vodianova and Kate Moss were among the guests.

8. ELTON JOHN’S 50TH BIRTHDAY PARTY, 6 APRIL 1997
With possibly the most OTT party dress ever seen, Elton John’s homage to Louis XIV glamour earns him a spot on this list. His birthday party at the Hammersmith Palais was celebrated with 500 of his closest friends.

9. FACTORY PARTY, 1965
When Edie Sedgwick danced in hotpants at Andy Warhol’s Factory among the drag queens and A-listers, it was the birth of the idea of downtown cool. Mixing high and low, grit and glamour has since been crucial for a good party.

10. POP MAGAZINE PARTY, 10 SEPTEMBER 2010
When Dasha Zhukhova was editor of Pop Magazine, she threw an exclusive party at Don Hills in New York for her social circles, mixing the worlds of fashion, art, the super rich and the rock crowd. When Iggy Pop performed, the crowd went wild.
