May Kwok

New York DJ May Kwok is the epitome of big city cool. Read on for her personal style tips and must-have beauty products.

In-demand DJ and events producer May Kwok is a fixture on New York’s creative downtown scene. She describes herself as an ”all-around creative person”, but we particularly love her sense of style; sleek minimalism mixed with 90’s tomboy. We are not the only May Kwok fans – DKNY asked her to walk in their SS15 show, and she is a fashion press favourite. For this feature, Kwok was photographed in New York City by Adam Katz Sinding.

WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
”My signature style always includes skinny jeans and a t-shirt.  I tend to opt for comfort. If I need to dress it up a bit, I’ll wear heels, add on some jewellery and throw on a leather jacket. I’m known to wear monochromatic colours, however I have been embracing colour and different textures in 2015.  Fashion evolves, as should a person’s style.”

WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNERS?
”My favourite designers are Helmut Lang and Phoebe Philo. I discovered Helmut Lang in the early 2000s and his designs are what got me into minimalist fashion – however Phoebe Philo revolutionized minimal fashion for me. She understands how women want to dress with our lifestyle.  She knows we all just want to be sophisticated, knowledgeable, but sexy and not a victim of fashion (however I love indulging in a trend now and then).”

WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
”Daria Werbowy, Erin Wasson – two girls who just don’t give a f**k.”

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH?
”Tulum, Mexico.  It’s just magical there and I try to go back at least once a year to recharge and clear my mind/spirit.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
”Japanese.”

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO LOOK?
”It’s currently 10 degrees in NYC so my go-to look is normally a button- down, oversized sweater, jeans, Adidas sneakers, a hat, scarf and a very, very warm coat.”

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN HISTORY, WHAT FASHION ERA WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE IN?
”The 90s! Crop tops and baggy jeans!  I guess I still sometimes dress this way.”

WHAT ITEM WOULD YOU NEVER PART FROM?
”Every single Celine item I own ☺”

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD?
”An artist (cartoonist, specifically).”

WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY FASHION PLEASURE?
”SHOES.  I love shoes.  Boots specifically. I might actually own about 20+ pairs of designer black boots.”

WHAT IS YOUR LATEST BEAUTY DISCOVERY?
”A makeup artist whom I worked with recently recommended I try Sunday Riley’s GOOD GENES serum to help brighten, exfoliate, and clarify my skin and she’s completely correct!  It’s changed my life.  Also all the cute Glossier products are so great.”
