Natalie Cantell

Eclectic and elegant, writer-slash-model Natalie Cantell’s style is as well put-together as it is interesting.

Natalie Cantell is a model, writer, stylist and style icon. Her style is simple and sophisticated – but she doesn't shy away from bold colours or the occasional fun accessory. Cantell grew up in New Zealand, and now shares her time between New York and Sydney, where she was photographed for H&M Life by Adam Katz Sinding.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNERS?
”Joseph Font, Kym Ellery, Jonny Johansson [Acne], Phoebe Philo [Céline], Dion Lee. Quiet talents like Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski [Hermès]. There’s a young designer from New Zealand called Georgia Alice, she’s going to do big things.”

WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
”Steve McQueen, and my sister in the ‘90s.”

WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
”That hasn’t happened, I don’t think… I still surprise myself with what I’m drawn to.”

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH?
”Apparently Copenhagen, although I haven’t been there yet. I’m sure it’s somewhere I haven’t been, I’m dying to go to Greece and Sri Lanka and Nepal, I want to get to Cuba before it becomes a whole other place. I fell hard for Stockholm, I love every inch of Italy and every corner of New Zealand. New York and Bondi are both home to me, the coastal walk from the south end of Bondi Beach around to Tamarama is one of the most beautiful places to wander in the world that’s still within a hundred metres of coffee.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
”Avocados. The omikase at Bugs in the East Village, New York, the steak or anything off the grill at St. Anselm in Brooklyn.”

IF YOU HAD TO LEAVE YOUR APARTMENT IN A HURRY, WHAT WOULD YOU GRAB?
”My dad’s watch.”

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO LOOK?
”A white men’s shirt, with anything. Over a bikini or a dress, with tailored pants, jeans, a leather skirt.”

WHY IS FASHION IMPORTANT?
”Fashion is like music and architecture and literature, it’s a way we can understand our history and sociology. We wear the fluctuations in our thinking.”

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN HISTORY, WHAT FASHION ERA WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE IN?
”Paris or Barcelona as the ‘50s turned into the ‘60s.”

WHAT ITEM WOULD YOU NEVER PART FROM?
”They will have to pry my gold Meadowlark protea cocktail ring off my cold, dead hand.”

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD?
”The first woman to referee an All Blacks game.” [The New Zealand national rugby team.]

WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY FASHION PLEASURE?
”Gold jewellery. Fine gold chains, dainty gold earrings, incredible vintage cocktail rings. Mary-Kate Olsen’s vintage Cartier engagement ring is the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen.”

WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET?
”Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Bill Murray, Jack Kerouac, Hemingway. Hopefully Bill is buying the drinks.”

WHAT DO YOU NEED RIGHT NOW?
”Another bottle of Marc Jacobs Daisy and everything from Ellery Resort ‘15.”

WHAT IS YOUR LATEST BEAUTY DISCOVERY?
”That’s it’s really just about rest, sweat, good food, hydration, yoga. Lots of sunscreen, lots of good fats like avocados and coconut oil. I’m a glutton and inherently lazy, but if I’m practicing yoga every day then I’m also sleeping better and drinking a lot more water. That’s the stuff that means I don’t take half an hour to get ready to go to dinner. You generally don’t need a better under-eye concealer; you just need to occasionally go to sleep before 11pm.”
