Fashion Dos and Don'ts at Roskilde Festival
There’s more to concert attire than crop tops and cut off denim. We stalked radio host and blogger Cathrine Nissen for a few lessons in festival style.
We’re in the midst of festival season. The US has Coachella, The UK has Glastonbury, Central Europe has Hurricane, Southern Europe has Primavera Sound – and Northern Europe has Roskilde. For over 40 years, the festival known for its orange canopy stage and always perfect line-up, has been a Danish tradition and institution that draws tens of thousands of festival-goers from all over the world.
We met up with one of them to find out everything from how to stay stylish no matter what weather to dreaming of sitting on Ed Sheeran’s shoulders at a hip hop concert.
HEY CATHRINE! WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?
“A beautiful vintage-looking embroidered shirt dress. Go for embroidery instead of sequins if you want to look bedazzled at a festival. It's less fragile. I paired it with an old leather belt, a bomber reminding me of my big sister's 90s look, and of course, my saviours; rubber boots!”
WHAT ARE YOUR DOS AND DON'TS WHEN IT COMES TO FESTIVAL STYLE?
“The beautiful thing about festivals is that anything goes! You'll fit right in just the way you are so don't feel you have to look the part. That being said, I'm all for comfort. It's not going to be my clothes that keep me from dancing and jumping in front of stage. And don’t bring delicates – everything is going in the washing machine afterwards.”
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT ROSKILDE?
“I don't think I really got the Roskilde feeling until last year. But Roskilde has this very beautiful vibe. Everyone is so kind and helps each other at concerts; back in the day it was a real hippie festival. It still shines through. Everyone's there to have fun, make new friends, fall in love and listen to music. And you can have a gourmet experience as well as share beers with your friends. There's room for everything.”
WHO’S YOUR FAVOURITE IN THIS YEAR’S ROSKILDE LINE-UP?
“Anderson .Paak! Most definitely. A Cali-rapper with the tightness of Kendrick Lamar, but with this very soulful crooner voice too. He always makes me feel good and reminds me of a palmy Malibu beach.”
FESTIVALS ARE ALL ABOUT HANGING WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND ENJOYING GREAT
MUSIC. WHO IS YOUR ULTIMATE CELEBRITY SQUAD MEMBER?
“Ed Sheeran! Maybe I should have mentioned a cool girl, but I doubt they'd let me sit on their shoulders in front of the Orange Stage. Sheeran would fit right in and would have to bring his guitar. He'd throw his hands up at a rap concert and hold my hair late at the end of the night. I'm sure.”
WHAT WOULD YOU NEVER WEAR TO A FESTIVAL?
“Anything goes! But maybe not sandals. I'm weird about dirty feet in bed but that's the result at a festival. Sneakers and rubber boots!”
WHAT’S YOUR BEST TIPS TO LOOK GOOD IN HOT WEATHER?
”Wear your biggest smile! And accessorise it with your biggest shades – they work like good shoes, they always up the outfit. And don't forget sunscreen – one great concert without and you risk a pretty bad burn.
“I pretty much wear my rubber boots come rain or sun actually. They tone down an outfit to that perfect casual degree.”
GIVE US YOUR BEST FESTIVAL BEAUTY TIP!
“A bit of rouge, a touch of tinted lip balm. And a whole lot of sunscreen.”
WHAT IS YOUR BEST CONSCIOUS FASHION TIP?
“Treat your clothes according to the washing instructions and always keep a needle and thread at home to repair instead of throwing it out.”
