Brilliant fashion innovations wanted

The H&M Foundation is looking for the boldest, brightest and greenest ideas to reinvent the fashion industry. You have one month left to apply.

This past February, the first ever Global Change Award ceremony took place in Stockholm’s city hall. With the Swedish Crown Princess Victoria present, five innovators split a grant of one million euro, divided between them after the people had chosen their favourites in an online vote. 

Today, those five innovations are part of an innovation accelerator programme – aiming to make them reality. In a not too distant future, we’ll probably be able to buy clothing made of citrus products, algae or waste-cotton and companies might start recycling unwanted polyester with the help of a microbe, or buy leftover textiles online.

At the first Global Change Award, innovators Michael Hummel and Marjaana Tanttu were awarded part of the grant for discovering how to convert waste-cotton into new textile.

As the realization of the previous winning innovations continues, it’s time to find five new ones. One month ago, the second edition of the award was launched when the non-profit H&M Foundation called out for five more innovations that can make fashion circular. Which means making a shift from “take-make-waste” to a fashion world where there is no waste.

On 31 October, the deadline for applications closes. In the one month that’s left, applicants are asked to submit their ideas that will be reviewed by an expert panel consisting of Vogue Italia’s editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani, model and advocate Amber Valletta, professor in sustainable textiles Rebecca Earley, among other experts.

• The H&M Foundation is a non-profit global foundation, privately funded by the Stefan Persson family, founders and main owners of H&M. Its mission is to drive long-lasting positive change and improve living conditions by investing in people, communities and innovative ideas. 

• Since 2013, the Stefan Persson family has donated 1.1 billion Swedish krona (USD 154 million/EUR 123 million) to the Foundation. 

• The first Global Change Award was launched in August 2015 and is an innovation challenge in the fashion industry. This is one of the world’s biggest challenges for early stage innovation and the first such initiative in the fashion industry.
