We have a major style crush on Danish stylist Alexandra Carl. She shares her inspiration, guilty pleasures and style icons in this beautiful story.
Alexandra Carl is one of the young stylists to watch. Although she might be young –she is no rookie. Alexandra started her career at the age of 16 at DANSK Magazine, combining high school with long hours in the studio. After finishing school, she moved to London and assisted at Love Magazine – as well as studying sociology and media psychology at the university. Alexandra Carl now works as a freelance stylist and is the fashion director of Rika Magazine. Last but not least, she is also one of our favourite Scandi style icons. Adam Katz Sinding captured Alexandra in her hometown Copenhagen.
WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
”Leather and suede. I put on a men’s jacket with almost anything I wear. It gives a wonderful masculine and raw contrast to any outfit.”
WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
”Diane Keaton in Annie Hall, or Patti Smith.”
IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN HISTORY, WHAT FASHION ERA WOULD YOU LIKE TO
”The late 70s – the ultimate fashion era of empowerment and liberation! Or the early 90s, the era of grunge and some of the greatest magazines ever, like The Face and DUTCH Magazine. I would have loved to be a part of those creative collaborations.”
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD?
”I wanted to be a ballet dancer, and also a flower decorator. Maybe that’s yet to come, haha.”
WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY FASHION PLEASURE?
”Shoes! Always always – I can go months without buying new clothes but shoes, especially boots and ‘man repeller shoes’ seem to be my obsession!”
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER?
”Martin Margiela. He is, or was, an absolute genius in construction and deconstruction of the expected.”
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH?
”The garden by my parent's house in Copenhagen – it's the ultimate relaxation for me and brings back so many memories. Or Columbia flower market in London where I love to hang out every Sunday when I manage to have a day off between travelling and work.”
WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET?
”Patti Smith – she is such an inspiration to me. As a style icon and as a powerful, empowering woman in a man’s world.”
WHAT DO YOU NEED RIGHT NOW?
”A summer wardrobe – I am such a winter person in my style. I love layering … Maybe it comes with being Scandinavian.”
