The Baseball Cap
It may have started with functionality, but the baseball cap has become one of fashion’s most beloved accessories.
THE STORY BEHIND
The Brooklyn Excelsiors were the first baseball team to wear the modern cap as part of their uniform. Baseball players had been wearing caps to protect themselves from the sun ever since the sport was first invented, but the earlier styles were often wide-brimmed hats made of straw. The ”Brooklyn Style” hat, which the Excelsiors wore in the 1860s, was rounded, had a small brim and was similar to the jockey cap. The style was later popularised in the 1890s and is the blueprint of today’s baseball caps.
The cap is often called ”America’s national hat”, but it took more than a century before it was socially accepted to wear it outside of the baseball field.
In films, baseball caps were worn by funny, goofy characters and never by presidents, sex symbols or heroes. But in the late 1970s and 1980s, something changed. The book ”Ball Cap Nation” lists eight factors behind the cap revolution, and we particularly believe in factor five: The Magnum Effect. Tom Selleck as Thomas Magnum in the TV series Magnum, P.I, was one of the first truly cool cap pioneers. And still one of the favourite style icons! Magnum forever.
After Magnum, a series of sexy and cool cap-lovers followed in popular culture.
Coolest of them all were of course the new hip hop stars of the 1980s, with groups like N.W.A setting a new standard for urban fashion.
Today, the baseball cap has powerful fans like Barack and Michelle Obama, and it has even made it all the way from the baseball field to the catwalk. For his A/W2012 collection for Dior Homme, designer Kris van Assche put a baseball cap on all the models he sent down the catwalk. This season, designers like Alexander Wang and Jeremy Scott for Moschino feature the baseball cap in their collections.
HOW TO STYLE IT
The baseball cap is still associated with streetwear, but stylist Columbine Smille says to forget the old rules about how and when to wear it – the baseball cap is a perfect way to add some edge to a smart outfit (and the best way to deal with a bad hair day).
”For a more polished look, choose a cap in a simple, clean style”, says Columbine Smille.
