Vashtie Kola is a creative force. Portrayed in her beloved New York, Vashtie told us about her signature style, why fashion is important and her beauty secret for long lashes.
New Yorker Vashtie Kola is a modern day epitome of a renaissance woman. A director (she’s worked with Justin Bieber, Kendrick Lamar and Solange), a designer (through her label Violette, she’s done collabs with Puma and rapper Cam’ron), a dj, model and all around extremely cool person, Vashtie’s always been on our #lifegoals list.
Mostly, we are in love with her style, which she describes as goth meets tomboy.
Photographer Adam Katz Sinding teamed up with Vashtie in New York, on an early summer day.
WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
”Part hood tomboy, part goth schoolgirl. I grew up in the hood and I’ve always loved the way boys dress, so that it made me want to dress like them. I also went to catholic school until I was 18, so wearing a uniform comes naturally to me.”
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH?
”New York City.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
”Anything raw and green.”
WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO LOOK?
”Right now: Black pleated skirt, black crop top and vintage black boots.”
WHY IS FASHION IMPORTANT?
”It's important because it's a quiet representation of who we are, more so style. Style speaks before we do and can speak volumes about our personality. Fashion can sometimes be superficial and empty, but I think individual style is absolutely crucial.
IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN HISTORY, WHAT FASHION ERA WOULD YOU LIKE TO
”The early 80s. I would have dressed like a b-boy or maybe like Deborah [Debbie] Harry.”
WHAT ITEM WOULD YOU NEVER PART FROM?
”My gold jewellery. I rarely, if ever, take it off... even to sleep or when I'm at the gym.
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD?
”An artist or a nun.”
WHAT IS YOUR LATEST BEAUTY DISCOVERY?
”Castor oil for natural hair growth. I'm using it on my lashes as an alternative to lash extensions.”
