London Fashion Week – the expectations

New York is over, now we’re getting ready for London Fashion Week. We asked top editors Pandora Sykes, Natalie Hartley and Donna Wallace about what to expect from the most exciting (?) week of the fashion month.

With New York Fashion Week behind us all eyes are looking to London were the streets soon will be filling up with models, designers, photographers – and of course the press. To get in the loop H&M Life contacted three true professionals with impressive Fashion Week experience for a Q&A about getting ready, getting dressed, and spotting the trends – both on and off the runway.

Let’s hear what Natalie Hartley from Glamour magazine, Pandora Sykes from Sunday Times Style, and Donna Wallace from Elle have to say about their favourite of the four fashion weeks.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE?
”I make sure my clothes are clean! It's a long month.”

WHAT’S YOUR UNIFORM DURING FASHION WEEK?
”Denim. It's my go to, as a good pair of jeans can go with everything. I still wear a pair that I have had since I was 18 – the older they are the better!”

WHO IS THE DESIGNER TO WATCH THIS SEASON?
”At the moment I am loving JW Anderson for Loewe and Nicholas Ghesquiere for Louis Vuitton.”

WHAT TREND WILL STAND OUT ON THE CATWALK?
”From last season the seventies is the big winner!”

WHAT WILL THE STREET STYLE STARS WEAR THIS SEASON?
”Probably a lot if denim and flared trousers.”

WHAT’S YOUR WEIRDEST OR FUNNIEST FASHION WEEK MOMENT?
”Last season I had these orange tinted sunglasses and I was a little hung over and hadn't realized one of the lenses had fallen out while I was walking along the street for God knows how long. Then someone asked if I had done the look on purpose.... I had no idea what he was talking about but when I got into the venue and took them off I realized what had happened and understood what he meant as I wear orange eye shadow and looked like I had purposely matched a lens on one side with the eye shadow showing on the uncovered eye! I felt like a real fashion victim – but it's a funny story now!”

WHO WILL BE THIS SEASON’S FRONT ROW CELEBRITY?
”I am not sure it changes that much. Kim Kardashian and Rihanna seem to be the new fixtures at fashion week but I am presuming some of the Oscar nominees will be out there too – people like Felicity Jones.”

WHAT ARE YOUR FASHION WEEK DO’S AND DON’TS?
”Always be comfortable in what you are wearing and don't wear heels if you can't walk in them!”

WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU’LL DO WHEN FASHION WEEK IS OVER?
”Get my tracksuit bottoms on!”

WHY IS LONDON THE BEST FASHION WEEK OF THEM ALL?
”Because we are not afraid to take risks. We are growing up as a nation in our taste of what we wear, but here is always an edge to how people dress and they are not afraid to be who they are. That means that there is always a fresh approach to fashion in this country.”

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR FASHION WEEK?
”Aside from clearing my diary!? Actually, it's not much aside from getting my nails done as chipped nails really bother me.”

WHAT’S YOUR UNIFORM DURING FASHION WEEK?
”I don't have a uniform; I kind of have the opposite approach to fashion – although there are some silhouettes I tend to fall back on – and wear pieces that are fun, moderately comfortable and speak to me.”

WHO IS THE DESIGNER TO WATCH THIS SEASON?
”For me, J.W. Anderson, Marques Almeida and Tom Ford.”

WHAT TREND WILL STAND OUT ON THE CATWALK?
”For SS15 it’s been the seventies trend, without question – and I think it will continue into AW16, with more emphasis on coloured furs and faux furs and rich fabrics like suede and innovative use of leather.”

WHAT’S YOUR WORST FASHION WEEK MOMENT?
”Running late for the Simone Rocha show last season I ran across the road and got taken down by a bike in full view of everyone. One shoe went flying, but I'm more amazed I didn't break an ankle!”

WHO WILL BE THIS SEASON’S FRONT ROW CELEBRITY?
”One or many Kardashians.... And [model] Suki Waterhouse, perhaps.”

WHAT ARE YOUR FASHION WEEK DO’S AND DON’TS?
”I don't tend to party a lot as I see fashion week as work. So excessive drinking with very early starts is a no-no for me! My do's? Enjoy it. How lucky we are to see such creativity up close. Sore feet and lack of sleep or phone battery shouldn't spoil that.”

WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU’LL DO WHEN FASHION WEEK IS OVER?
”Get a massage! I get a really sore back, exacerbated by time on my feet.”

WHY IS LONDON THE BEST FASHION WEEK OF THEM ALL?
”Because some clichés really are true: London is the most fun, the most adventurous and the most unpredictable.”

The cropped – boot exposing – trouser will be a thing.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR FASHION WEEK?
”Check the weather, make a list (mental or otherwise) of the pieces I am looking forward to wearing, have lined up to wear or bought / stashed to debut before they become part of my wardrobe rotation. ”

WHAT’S YOUR UNIFORM DURING FASHION WEEK?
”Winter shows I base around my love of a good coat. Summer shows and the warmer temperatures allow a bit more fun and breeziness. ”

WHO IS THE DESIGNER TO WATCH THIS SEASON?
”Faustine Steinmetz, Danielle Romerill and Molly Goddard.”

WHAT TREND WILL STAND OUT ON THE CATWALK?
”I think coloured outwear, killer coats and all things textured still has mileage. The cropped – boot exposing – trouser will be a thing. Plus graphic bags and coloured boots.”

WHAT WILL THE STREET STYLE STARS WEAR THIS SEASON?
”Coloured faux furs.”

WHAT’S YOUR COOLEST FASHION WEEK MOMENT?
”A few years ago at Matthew Williamsons show, when Prince leapt up from his seat in front row to perform with his band. It makes me laugh every time I think about it. He just leapt up and switched it on. ”

WHO WILL BE THIS SEASON’S FRONT ROW CELEBRITY?
”Taylor Swift? Beyoncé?”

WHAT ARE YOUR FASHION WEEK DO’S AND DON’TS?
”Always have snacks/ water. Always check the weather – unless you're happy to sacrifice a loved piece of your wardrobe to the elements. One fashion week the weather was so rainy it was like choosing which pair of shoes you were happy to sacrifice each day. Some never recovered. Try to hook up with colleagues and friends on the circuit that you like spending time and have a laugh with. Fashion week in good company is priceless.”

WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU’LL DO WHEN FASHION WEEK IS OVER?
”Have a lovely meal – again with good company.”

WHY IS LONDON THE BEST FASHION WEEK OF THEM ALL?
”London is the best mix of all the fashion weeks. It's great at supporting the new and giving them a platform. The once small labels have become successful global brands in their own right and it is beautiful to see.”
