Models with hidden talents
Yes, they’re charming and look great on the runway, but there is a lot more to these women – we run through ten of the best models with extra talents off the catwalk.
10. COCO ROCHA – IRISH DANCING
Since being discovered by an agent at an Irish dancing competition aged 14, Coco Rocha hasn’t let go of her roots, even showing off her skills at a Jean-Paul Gaultier show in 2007. It still has a place in her heart and has helped her achieve a physicality in her modelling that others can only dream of.
9. AMANDA MURPHY – RADIOLOGIST
H&M Magazine cover girl Amanda Murphy has reached some of the highest peaks of the modelling world – walking for Prada and Dior, editorials in W and Vogue. But she hasn’t quit her day job as a radiologist and hopes to progress to MRI school eventually, too.
8. KAREN ELSON – MUSICIAN
After a career as fashion’s favourite redhead, Karen Elson released her debut album, "The Ghost Who Walks", in 2010. The process involved stepping out of the shadow of her then-husband Jack White of the White Stripes to venture forth and make a musical name for herself – which she did with aplomb.
7. LILY COLE – KNITWEAR SUPREMO
In addition to modelling, Lily Cole has acting, philanthropy and a Cambridge degree on her CV. And in 2009, she launched an ethical knitwear company, The North Circular, made using British wools and donating some profits to environmental groups.
6. HELENA CHRISTENSEN – PHOTOGRAPHER
Supermodel Helena stepped out from in front of the camera to go behind the scenes when she became a photographer. In a few short years, she landed in the pages of the mags she used to model in, and has even exhibited her work in New York and London.
5. ANDREEA DIACONU – KARATE
After agreeing to pursue modelling in an attempt to fund her karate career, Romanian model Andreea Diaconu still finds time to practice her skills, and has said that if she was not a model now, she would have become a karate instructor instead.
4. CHANEL IMAN – BOXING
Many models are fans of unusual exercise, but for Chanel, it’s boxing all the way. The Victoria’s Secret Angel posts pictures of herself in the ring on Instagram, and uses sparring the gym to build muscle onto her lean physique.
3. ANJA RUBIK – 25 MAGAZINE
Not content with being all over the pages of magazines, Anja Rubik turned publisher in 2012 launching 25. The magazine’s first issue, focusing on women in fashion and beyond it, features many of her famous friends including Liya Kebede and Annie Leibovitz.
2. GISELE – SINGING
Gisele surprised everyone with her impressive singing ability in 2013, when she covered the classic Kinks song, "All Day and All of the Night" for H&M. The following season, it was Blondie’s "Heart of Glass", raising money for UNICEF and showing that Gisele may love to sing as much as she loves to pose.
1. KARLIE KLOSS – CODING
She bakes, she does ballet and she hangs out with Taylor Swift – it’s a miracle Karlie has time for extra hobbies. But recently she has turned techie, and has been learning how to code with Code.org and encouraging more young women to do the same.
