The 10 best fashion quarrels

Fashion is full of big personalities, big shows – and big drama. And when wires get crossed, quarrels can escalate fast and get played out in public. We run through our top ten fashion fights.

Giorgio Armani versus Dolce and Gabbana, All Over Press.

10. ARMANI VERSUS DOLCE & GABBANA
When words like “plagiarism” get thrown around in fashion, you know things are serious. In 2009, Giorgio Armani accused Dolce and Gabbana of copying a pair of quilted trousers, seen in the previous season’s Armani collection. What particularly miffed Armani was that D&G are not exactly small fish in a big pond  – "I would understand if they were nobodies,” he said. “But honestly!"

Azzedine Alaïa versus Anna Wintour, All Over Press.

9. AZZEDINE ALAÏA VERSUS ANNA WINTOUR
Not one to pander to the status quo, designer Azzedine Alaïa has been outspoken on the topic of Anna Wintour. He claims the Vogue editor, with whom he first quarrelled in 2009, will not be remembered in the history of fashion, and that he doesn’t believe in her tastes – probably because she’s not a fan of his work.

Yohji Yamamoto versus WWD, All Over Press.

8. REI KAWAKUBO AND YOHJI YAMAMOTO VERSUS WOMEN’S WEAR DAILY
The seismic changes made when Japanese designers Kawakubo and Yamamoto arrived in Paris in 1981 did not impress WWD, who grouped them under the headline “Intellectual bag ladies”. But their sneering was misplaced and the designers made a powerful impact in the years that followed.

Nicolas Ghesquière versus Balenciaga, All Over Press.

7. NICOLAS GHESQUIÈRE VERSUS BALENCIAGA
After 15 years at Balenciaga, Nicolas Ghesquière was not going to go quietly. He left in 2012 due to feeling “sucked dry” by the brand, who then reacted by suing the designer over his comments. Now he’s settled at Louis Vuitton and has been replaced by Alexander Wang, hopefully the controversy will pass with no disruption to the fantastic designs on both sides.

Coco Chanel versus Elsa Schiaparelli, All Over Press.

6. COCO CHANEL VERSUS ELSA SCHIAPARELLI
While what they made was vastly different, Schiaparelli and Chanel were thought of as jealous rivals during their 1920's and 1930's heyday – Schiaparelli’s artful designs clashing with the elegant work of Chanel. Legend has it that Chanel even “accidentally” pushed Schiaparelli into a candle at a ball, in an attempt to set her dress on fire.

Yves Saint Laurent versus Karl Lagerfeld, All Over Press.

5. YVES SAINT LAURENT VERSUS KARL LAGERFELD
With a rivalry that grew out of their close competition in Paris fashion circles during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Lagerfeld and Saint Laurent dictated trends and styles through their work, but grew more and more at odds with each other as the years went by.

Emmanuelle Alt versus Carine Roitfeld, All Over Press.

4. EMMANUELLE ALT VERSUS CARINE ROITFELD
Sometimes feuds can be found in the unlikeliest places. Before Carine stepped down as editor of French Vogue in 2011, she was apparently not on speaking terms with Emmanuelle Alt, the fashion director who would succeed her. Now the pair are rarely seen on the front row together, seemingly forgetting about their many years working together at the mag.

Hedi Slimane versus Cathy Horyn, All Over Press.

3. HEDI SLIMANE VERSUS CATHY HORYN
What a difference a review can make. After Cathy Horyn slated Hedi’s 2012 debut for Saint Laurent – to which she wasn’t invited – Hedi took to Twitter to call the former New York Times reporter “a schoolyard bully” and “a little bit of a stand-up comedian”.

Kanye West versus the fashion world, All Over Press.

2. KANYE WEST VERSUS THE FASHION WORLD
Despite his best attempts, Kanye’s forays into the fashion world have not been met with open arms. Whether it was his 2000's sportswear line Pastelle, or his 2011 Paris debut with DW Kanye West, critics have been eager to heap scorn on the rapper, who really is trying his best. Nonetheless, his impact on the fashion world has been great, in part thanks to his close ties with designers like Riccardo Tisci.

Suzy Menkes versus Marc Jacobs, All Over Press.

1. SUZY MENKES VERSUS MARC JACOBS
Suzy Menkes had enough of late running fashion shows in 2007, when Marc Jacobs made her wait two hours for his show. The critic said she would like “to murder him with my bare hands and never see another Marc Jacobs show”, and the temperamental designer replied in dramatic fashion, threatening to leave America and told Menkes not to come to the next show.
