We hung out with Ashley Graham pre Met Gala

The supermodel and body activist talks about helping design her dress, wanting to meet J-Lo on the red carpet, and what it is that makes fashion’s biggest night so very special.

No one can possibly have missed the long list of artists, actors, models and fashion A-listers who wore custom-made looks to celebrate designer Rei Kawakubo’s work for Comme des Garçons at the Met Gala on Monday night. Of course model Ashley Graham’s dress – designed together with H&M’s team – was no exception.

Clad in a deconstructed corset decorated with exuberant ruffles of dark red organza, the model got ready for “the super bowl of fashion” together with a glam team in a hotel suite overlooking Central Park. We met up with her before the party to take a closer look at her outfit, find out what her Met Gala dream squad is – and what things she has left on her bucket list.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR H&M MET GALA OUTFIT?
“I love that it's effortless and chic, but also so intricate and creative. It really represents my style and personality, and the deconstructed corset also pays homage to Rei Kawakubo's work.”

WHAT WAS IMPORTANT TO YOU IN THE DESIGN PROCESS?
“It was important that I wore something that accentuated my curves. There aren't tons of curvy women wearing high fashion on red carpets, so I wanted to make sure that my dress celebrated the female body and showed that all shapes and sizes are beautiful.”

WHAT MAKES THE MET GALA SO SPECIAL, IN YOUR EYES?
“This is an event where designers can really showcase their work as art. Every look is a surprise and unexpected.”

WHO ARE YOU EXCITED TO MEET?
“I would love to meet Jennifer Lopez, who's been a style icon of mine since I was young.”

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS YEAR’S THEME?
“Rei Kawakubo has created one of the most famous fashion houses of all time. It's exciting that she's the first living designer to be the focus of the Met Gala since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983.”

YOU JOINED OTHER H&M-DRESSED GUESTS AT THE MET GALA. IF YOU COULD CREATE YOUR DREAM PARTY, WHICH FIVE PEOPLE WOULD YOU INVITE?
“Oprah, Michelle Obama, Kathy Ireland, Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld.”

YOUR CAREER HAS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL THIS FAR. WHAT DO YOU STILL HAVE ON YOUR BUCKET LIST, CAREER WISE?
“I would love to have my own show one day, and right now in addition to modelling and being a body activist, I'm really excited about my current TV projects.”
