Olivia Wilde backstage for H&M Conscious Exclusive collection.
Olivia Wilde’s conscious statement
When not modelling the new H&M Conscious Exclusive collection or starring in Hollywood success films, Olivia Wilde is saving the world. Read on to learn how to join her.
We already have a long list of reasons why we love Olivia Wilde. She is one of Hollywood’s funniest, smartest and most talented actresses. She has amazing cheekbones, is a fierce feminist and is not afraid to speak her mind on Twitter.
And if you somehow missed her ambition to make the world a better place, now is the time to jump on the Wilde wagon.
Together with partner Barbara Burchfield, whom she befriended while launching a non-profit in Haiti, Wilde runs Conscious Commerce – “an experiment in living (and shopping) with a conscience”. The project was born out of the desire to change the fundraiser-based charity in our society, and the idea is as simple as it is smart: Buy a product you like and probably would buy anyway, and donate money to charity at the same time.
”When we looked at the billions of dollars being poured into retail on a daily basis, we understood the power of the consumer as an agent of change. We also understood the consumer’s desire for background information when buying everything from food to handbags, and we wanted to support the trend of transparency that allows for more thoughtful purchases.”
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE ABOUT THE CONCEPT OF CHARITY?
”I want to remove the sense of powerlessness that many people feel when considering charity. People assume only the very wealthy can make an impact, and that's of course untrue. There is also a sense that charity is somewhat self-serving and ineffective, and this is extremely damaging to a world where global activism and participation is crucial to solving our most dangerous problems.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE 'SUSTAINABILITY IN EVERYDAY LIFE' THING?
”I recycle, I conserve water by limiting how often I wash my jeans, as well as limit how much water I waste while bathing, I'm thoughtful about our household’s consumption of meat, I read the paper on my iPad, I buy vintage goods when possible. I suppose my favourite tip for everyday sustainability is to walk to your destination when possible, which is a helpful choice for both the atmosphere and your heart.”
WHAT IS YOUR DRIVING FORCE?
”The clear necessity for change.”
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONLY ONE THING ABOUT THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT
”I would remove the sense of entitlement and short-sightedness that allows us to be so careless about our behaviour. When I see the streets covered in litter, I wonder when we were taught not to worry about anything but ourselves in the moment. I would love to raise a family that is deeply conscious of the consequences of our actions in everyday life.”
WHO IS YOUR HERO?
”Too many to choose from. [Writer and feminist activist] Gloria Steinem is a woman I deeply respect for her grace under fire, and fearless dedication to fighting for justice and equality for all human beings. It’s also her birthday [when answering this], so she’s on my mind, and I can only pray to be as feisty and gorgeous as she is when I turn 81!”
WHAT DO YOU SAY TO PEOPLE WHO THINK SUSTAINABLE FASHION IS
”There’s nothing boring about empowering consumers to change the world while celebrating themselves with fashion.”
YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE FROM THE H&M CONSCIOUS EXCLUSIVE
”I love the tux. It is the epitome of chic.”
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?
”Endless surprises, challenges, and opportunities. We would love Conscious Commerce to become a parent company to many ethically run businesses, and therefore allow consumers the ability to always shop consciously.”
