8 HUNGER GAMES STYLE LESSONS
The Hunger Games has given us a look into what the future of fashion might look like. To celebrate the premiere of the last movie in the series, we go through the best style lessons from Panem.
SPOILER ALERT! Don’t read this if you haven’t seen the three first Hunger Games movies.
8. HOW TO DRESS FOR A PARTY YOU DON’T WANT TO BE AT
Being forced to go to extravagant cocktail parties isn’t something most of us experience on the daily. But for Katniss and Peeta there’s always somewhere to be or something to do that involves the extravagance of the Capitol. Despite their inability to say no to invitations, they always turn up in amazing outfits – matched with very miserable faces.
7. MATCHING YOUR HAIR AND BROWS IS A THING
… but only for the very fashion forward, like the Hunger Games TV host Ceasar Flickerman who changes the colour of his hair and brows every year. As with most things, consistency is key to pull of a difficult look. Lesson learned: Experimenting is fun and if you’re going to make an extreme fashion move – go full-force.
6. WEAR POWERFUL ACCESSORIES
Making statements with what you wear is fundamental to anyone with a fashion interest. Katniss’ only accessory is a Mockingjay pin – which in itself becomes the symbol for the districts’ uprising. Being proud of your believes and showing it is nothing but a bold fashion statement. Which is very applicable in real life.
5. WHAT ALL WHITE EVERYTHING SHOULD LOOK LIKE
Many of us have tried (and often failed) with a monochrome white look. In Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014) Peeta nails the ensemble thanks to layering several garments in different textures. With this look (especially thanks to the bow tie!) he looks like a 19th century dandy who’s time-travelled and landed on another planet.
4. THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS “OVERDRESSED”
The District 12 escort Effie Trinket is flamboyant to say the least, and when meeting Katniss for the first time she’s not exactly conforming to the practices of the local culture (which consists of oppressed coal miners). To her, overdressing is unheard of and she did definitely not worry about a massive brooch clashing with an even bigger headpiece when putting together this look.
3. HOW TO MAKE A FAKE WEDDING BELIEVABLE
In The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) Katniss and Peeta are content at appearing as happy and in love as possible. In a desperate effort to avoid being thrown into a second round of Hunger Games, Katniss throws on a wedding dress that in reality weighs over 11 kilograms, and wins the affection of the public.
2. HOW TO MAKE THE BEST WITH THE MEANS YOU’VE GOT
When the always stylish and well-dressed Effie Trinket is banished to District 13 (which has a strict forest green dress code) she manages to add some glamour to the uniform outfit by turning a scarf into an interesting headpiece.
1. HOW TO LOOK GOOD WHEN YOU’RE TOO HOT
After winning the games together with Peeta in The Hunger Games (2012), Katniss´ becomes a superstar in Panem and is (for literal reasons) nicknamed The Girl On Fire. Why? Because of a (yet to be invented) technique that makes her outfits burst into flames. Despite the fact that hot flames are surrounding her, the lion-hearted heroine always keeps her cool.
