JEANETTE FRIIS MADSEN

Copenhagen girls are the coolest. This week, Costume fashion editor Jeanette Friis Madsen picks and styles her H&M favourites.

To us, ”Everyday Icon” (which also is the name of this series) means someone who always looks stylish no matter the situation: the coolest girl at the party, but also the one you envy on Mondays at the office; the girl who makes a simple t-shirt and pair of jeans look good. And most of the Danish girls we know master that art.

Fashion editor Jeanette Friis Madsen is no exception. Shot by Adam Katz Sinding, she styles her favourite H&M items – and explains the secret behind her style.

WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
”Kate Moss pre 2008 and Gilda Ambrosio.”

WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
”For me it’s all about contrasts and proportions!  It has to be casual and cool, yet feminine. For example, a long feminine skirt or dress would always be paired with a pair of boots or sneakers and whenever the weather allows it, a hoodie or a sweatshirt. If I wear a pair of heels, I pair it with jeans and a t-shirt for contrast.”

WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER?
“It varies from season to season. But I LOVE what Demna Gvasalia has achieved with Vetements and now Balenciaga. It’s not just one look, it’s the whole collection. It’s feminine, relaxed, yet still sexy and street – the perfect mix in my world.”

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH?
”Where the sun shines and I can see palm trees. I lost my heart to Greece, Los Angeles, Tulum and Cuba. The best setup is, of course, when my husband, boys and close friends are with me! Copenhagen is also worth mentioning, I LOVE Copenhagen – in the summer time.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
”I couldn’t live without white bread and butter, or my favourite salad with red cabbage, kale, beets, goat cheese, almonds, pomegranate and parsley.”

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO LOOK?
”High-waist cropped skinny jeans, an oversized t-shirt and a sweatshirt, a pair of flashy flat shoes and a eye-catching clutch.”

WHY IS FASHION IMPORTANT?
”It’s a way to express yourself and your personality. What and who do you want to be? And also because it’s something that can define and characterise an era, a period – gotta love that.”

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN HISTORY, WHAT FASHION ERA WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE IN?
”The 70s – I think they had so much fun!”

I couldn’t live without white bread and butter.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD?
”A singer – I still don’t get why someone hasn’t discovered me yet ☺”

WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY FASHION PLEASURE?
”Jackets, I have way too many. My collection is big and in all possible variations. The oldest one is an heirloom from my grandmother. A tiny suede bomber jacket. People thought it was a Chanel jacket the first time I wore it. I love that people can’t recognise the brand – it gives it so much more personality.”

WHAT DO YOU NEED RIGHT NOW?
”Materially: A Justin Bieber t-shirt from his Purpose Tour merch made by Fear of God. Just a little obsessed with the guy! Physically: More time with my kids.”
