Au natural

Celebrities and models have already revealed their true faces. Are you brave enough to join the #nomakeup trend?

In 2013, ‘selfie’ was selected as Word of the Year by Oxford Dictionaries, most likely because of all the time people were spending to perfect the right angle or lighting. The right hair and make-up are, of course, also essential. Or are they? There is now an increasing desire for authenticity in social media. Which is why we see a new au naturel trend emerging: hashtag #nomakeup. And it’s actresses and models who are leading the charge.

It all began last August when Jennifer Aniston’s hair stylist Chris McMillan uploaded a sunkissed photo of the actress using the hashtag #nomakeup. Around the same time, pop star Demi Lovato uploaded a photo of herself with the caption: “Ladies, be brave today.. take off your make-up and stop using those filters!! We are beautiful!!!” Her fans responded by uploading their own barefaced looks, and it wasn’t long before other celebrities, including Miranda Kerr and Beyoncé, got in on the trend.

The fashion industry took notice as well, and at the S/S 2014 collections the message was crystal clear: put the products away this season. Backstage at Balmain, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler and Anthony Vaccarello, mascara was abandoned entirely. A natural-looking complexion is also an important part of the look.

So how to face this brave new world, sans make-up? Estée Lauder’s creative makeup director Tom Pecheux recommends spending five minutes massaging the skin daily, while applying moisturiser. That might sound like a lot – but think of the time you save by forgoing your make-up routine. Plus, as Pecheux says, your skin will really love you for it!
