8 WAYS TO GET MAGNUM P.I.'S STYLE

Aloha shirts, baseball caps, high-waisted jeans and a fuzzy moustache. No, we’re not talking about an average hipster; we’re talking the legendary Magnum P.I. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the show's premiere, we dissect the star’s style.

All Over Press

8. THE VELOUR TRACK SUIT
Judging by the ABC logo on this velour sweater, this picture is taken off set and not seen in an episode. Disregard that. This image proves what type of man can actually pull off a feminine style sweater: the ultimate macho man. If Magnum is your style icon, you best have good growth of beard, a hairy chest and a pair of strong arms to match.

7. THE HIGH-WAISTED JEANS
In Magnum’s heyday the skinny jeans were as foreign as sushi (Japan excluded). His relaxed yet active everyday uniform mostly consisted of a shirt with a tropical print tucked into a pair of high-waisted loose-fit jeans. Remember normcore? These trousers would go perfectly with a pair of unbranded sneakers and a boxy sweatshirt.

6. THE RING
For decades it’s been considered unmanly to sport accessories and jewellery. Those days are long gone. If you’re a jewellery newbie, a signet ring is a good first step before going full force with bracelets or necklaces, or why not a ring on every finger.

5. OLD SCHOOL ACCESSORIES
Few things are as hipster as old crappy technology. Magnum P.I.'s cell phone (or cordless landline phone?) belongs in a museum – or in the hands of a bearded plaid-clad fixed-gear cycling struggling artist. Of course, in the mid-80s this phone was cutting edge.

4. THE MALE HOT PANTS
Don’t try this one at home. Magnum’s shorts don’t leave much to the imagination and are something only the very confident or overbold can pull off.

3. THE BASEBALL CAP
Magnum P.I. lives and works on Hawaii, which means the poor guy is constantly exposed to warm weather, blue skies and sunlight. To protect that face (and ‘stache) he needs a cap. Being a Michigan native, Magnum proudly reps the baseball team Detroit Tigers on his headgear.

2. THE ALOHA SHIRT
The resort shirt was one of the key items for men last summer. We know for a fact that it’s not losing ground next season. Magnum knew it 35 years ago.

1. THE MUSTACHE
Magnum P.I. would never had become a hit show if a man with a naked upper lip had played the lead. We’re sure of it. Magnum’s moustache is a masterpiece and according to an article in Esquire that listed the all-time best moustaches, Tom Selleck has the “ultimate authoritative ‘stache”.
