THE 10 BEST TRANSGENDER FASHION MOMENTS
2015 saw transgender issues go beyond trend and become a crucial part of how fashion works. As The Danish Girl opens in cinemas this week, we look at ten of the most important trans style moments.
10. ISIS KING ON AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL
Two-time ANTM contestant Isis was one of the most visible transgender people on TV when she first appeared in 2008. While she came tenth in that series, since then she has modelled and become an advocate for trans issues in the media.
9. LADY GAGA AND JO CALDERONE
Lady Gaga introduced us to Jo Calderone, her male alter ego, back in 2010, in a series of artful images shot by Nick Knight for Vogue Hommes Japan. Proving that Gaga will always have another surprising layer to her personality, Sicilian mechanic Jo represents a part of the singer that can’t be pinned down.
8. GENDERLESS COLLECTIONS
Gone are the days of gender-segregation on the shop floor – today the concept of menswear versus womenswear has lost its lustre. Genderless collections from designers such as Acne Studios and Gucci have proved that actually, men and women aren’t so different after all, even when it comes to what we wear.
7. THE WOMEN WHO WORK BOTH SIDES
Gender fluidity doesn’t have a single definition, and the fashion world has lately been captivated by the likes of Casey Legler and Erika Linder, biologically-female models who often present as androgynous or masculine, and work as male models, looking more comfortable in suits and ties than they might in fanciful couture.
6. LEA T’S RISE TO FAME
Brazilian model Lea T first emerged as the muse of Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci and really turned heads in 2011, when she kissed Kate Moss on the cover of the androgynous issue of Love. The stunning brunette made further history last year when she was announced as the face of Redken.
5. CAITLYN JENNER AS COVER GIRL
2015 is the year that trans issues have gone mainstream, with the tipping point often linked to Caitlyn Jenner’s July Vanity Fair cover. We saw Caitlyn in all her polished glory, wearing a wasp-waisted corset and redefining femininity as we knew it.
4. & OTHER STORIES CAMPAIGN
Rather than simply casting a trans It-girl in their August campaign, & Other Stories went a step further and put together an all-star team of creatives who are trans, in front of and behind the camera. Hari Nef and Valentijn De Hingh modelled in the images shot by Amos Mac, a trending New York photographer.
3. ANDREJA PEJIC’S BIG MOMENT
Andreja first made a splash in the fashion world as Andrej, an androgynous male model who could model in both men’s and women’s shows for Jean Paul Gaultier. But in 2014 Andrej became Andreja, and her success has shown that gender fluidity is more than a passing trend – even better, in the fashion world it’s no longer a big deal.
2. LAVERNE COX ON THE RED CARPET
Her role as Sophia in Orange is the New Black brought the wonderful Laverne Cox into our lives, and her dramatic turns on the red carpet have shown us that trans stars are no less glamorous than anybody else in Hollywood.
1. HARI NEF HITS THE BIG TIME
From darling of indie designers such as Eckhaus Latta to Hollywood star (see her inTransparent’s new season next month), Hari Nef has had a wild year or two. The 23-year-old model and actress was signed to IMG in May, the first openly trans model to do so.
