Designers are the new celebs

It’s the era of Instagram power and our insiders discuss how this is changing what it means to be a fashion designer – or a model. You won’t believe the conclusion they arrive at!

Kendall Jenner by Florian Meacci.

A: Tom Ford has revealed the star of his new perfume ads! Can you guess who has scored that lucrative contract?

B: Surprise me.

A: *Drumroll face* It is Tom Ford!

B: That is not a surprise. It’s perfection. It’s a sign o’ the times. It’s Tom freaking Ford. Darling, there is nothing more “now” than a designer who is a celebrity.

A: Well, Tom surely is perfection, but just to be clear here, we’re not talking about Lindsay Lohan for Ungaro, or Sweetface by J.Lo, are we?

B: Gawd, no. I’m thinking more those designers who are as famous, if not more famous, than their clothes. Just look at Instagram, where our celebrity designers have HUGE followings: Olivier Rousteing at Balmain (cutie!), Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy (hawt!), Victoria Beckham (sassy!)...

A: Although sometimes when you follow people like these on social media, you have to brace yourself for all the CAPITAL LETTERS and EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!! And then I haven’t even started talking about the hashtags. #nopleasedont #toomuch #stopitalready

B: #sorrynotsorry

A: But where will it all end? Can you even be a designer today without also being out there, promoting, showing off your enviable lifestyle? I wonder what Yves Saint Laurent would’ve thought of this…

B: The way it’s going, in the not-so-distant future, stars won’t be wearing dresses on the red carpet – you’ll just have the designer strolling past the cameras and adoring fans!

A: And that designer will probably be a model. Just think about it: Being “a face” is so passé nowadays. Models need a social media following to be able to get places. In fact, it can take you anywhere. Just look at Kendall Jenner who now has a big beauty contract and Cara who can add actress to her CV. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley gets her own fragrance! What’s the next step? I see models taking over. Why not be celeb, model and designer, all wrapped into one? Who can model the dress better than a model? I’m asking you?! WHO???

B: STOP! *rant face* will give you wrinkles!

A: *silent vow never to rant or smile ever again*

B: But if we’re talking about winning via the internet – AND WE ARE – that gong goes to the one and only Kim Kardashian. The walking epitome of success through selfies. Beauty and the bum. Fabulously and infuriatingly famous. Alliterations abound. #sorrynotsorry

A: Yes… that ever-present Kim… How many followers does she have now? 25.7 million?

The identity of our gossip folk remains an enigma. The illustrator behind this drawing, however, is the well-known and adored Florian Meacci, a French illustrator based in London.
