THE 10 MOST OUTRAGEOUS RED CARPET OUTFITS
The red carpet is the undisputed home of showing off in front of an audience. So it’s no surprise that it’s where certain celebrities have walked straight into pop culture history.
1. JLO TAKES THE PLUNGE
Jennifer Lopez’s diaphanous green Versace dress may not seem so shocking today, but at the Grammys in 2000, the sheer dress, with its barely-there neckline and brooch fastening, made for instant fashion scandal.
2. TREY PARKER AND MATT STONE’S DIVA STYLE
At the Oscars in 2000, the South Park creators turned their satirical eyes on recent famous dresses, braving the red carpet in JLo’s Versace number and Gwyneth Paltrow’s pale pink gown from the previous year’s Oscars.
3. KATY PERRY’S TAKE ON ANDROGYNY
While some female celebs love to rock a masculine look on the red carpet, Katy Perry couldn’t make her mind up at the MTV EMAs in 2008. With one half in a mannish tux and the other in a poofy prom dress, Katy got the best of both worlds.
4. CHER RUFFLES SOME FEATHERS
People are still talking about this one! Cher, never one to play it safe, attended the 1986 Oscars in this daring number by costume icon Bob Mackie, with a feathered headdress that surely blocked the view for those in the 10 rows (at least) behind her.
5. LIL KIM’S PURPLE PASTY
If a purple asymmetrical mermaid-inspired catsuit wasn’t enough of a style statement, a scantily-clad Lil Kim pulled out all the punches for the 1999 VMAs with her seashell-shaped pasty covering up just enough boob to avoid the TV censors.
6. BJÖRK SWANS ONTO THE SCENE
Björk’s never been conventional, and at the Oscars in 2001 her wraparound swan dress by Marjan Pejoski, got her on many worst-dressed lists. But she stuck by the controversial dress, apparently even getting a second one made – the feathered wonder can’t be dry-cleaned.
7. NICKI MINAJ IS MEGA MANGA
Never one to keep it simple, Nicki Minaj took her ‘Harajuku Barbie’ persona to new heights at the 2011 VMAs with an explosion of anime colours and accessories piled on from head to toe.
8. ROSE MCGOWAN BARES ALL WITH MARILYN MANSON
How do you steal the spotlight when your boyfriend is shock rocker Marilyn Manson? For Rose McGowan at the 1998 VMAs, the answer was to wear as little as possible, in this very slinky, very revealing mesh and chainmail number.
9. DIANE KEATON IN CHARACTER
To accept her Best Actress Oscar in 1977 for Annie Hall, Diane Keaton dipped straight into Annie’s own wardrobe, with a skirt, wide trousers and a mannish blazer. Yes, that’s right – daywear to the Oscars…
10. LADY GAGA MAKES A MEAL OF IT
What’s the most outrageous material of all? Lady Gaga answered that question at the VMAs in 2010 when she wore a gown made of raw flank steak, landing her in hot water with animal activists.
