The Hoodie

A tough, athletic softie, the hoodie is making a strong comeback in fashion. For a modern take, this is how to style it.

THE STORY BEHIND IT
With a fan base ranging from medieval monks to graffiti writers, avant-garde designers and everyone in between, the hoodie is certainly one of the most loved items in fashion history. Champion claims to have invented the modern day hoodie in the 1930’s, to meet the needs of outdoor workers and athletes. In the 1970’s it popped up in the streets of New York where the graffiti writers wore it hood up to stay down low. The rest is Hip Hop history. And fashion history – the hoodie will always be a statement piece.

HOW TO STYLE IT
The hoodie has always been a streetwear staple, but don’t be afraid to give it a smarter feel. For this shoot, stylist Columbine Smille paired it with a lightweight, navy coat and a fine knit. ”Combining the hoodie with more tailored pieces is no longer a big no-no – the opposite!” she says.
If you have room for only one hoodie in your wardrobe – go for the grey.

Photographer Tobias Lundkvist’s favourite items are the classics: a black t-shirt and Chuck Taylors. Stylist Columbine Smille’s favourite item is the perfect black silk dress.
