The endless appeal of the cashmere jumper
Find out five things you didn't know about the garment that epitomises casual chic.
1. FROM KASHMIR IN CENTRAL ASIA...
The cashmere fibre is six times finer than human hair, and one of the most luxurious and expensive natural fabrics in the world. Its name comes from the Kashmir province located in Central Asia, bordering India and Pakistan, where it was first woven thousands of years ago. Today, of course, breeds of cashmere goats can be found all over the world.
2. ... TO THE ROMAN EMPIRE – AND BEYOND
Cashmere items have been fashion items for over a millennium. The rich and powerful of ancient Rome loved the fabric, but following the collapse of the empire the luxurious material disappeared from Europe for centuries, and didn't resurface until after the dark ages, when European royals – most notably, Napoleon – discovered all the perks of the super soft and warm fabric.
3. THE BIRTH OF THE SWEATER GIRL
Before the 1910s and 1920s, sweatshirts and knitted jumpers were far from statement pieces in fashion. Instead, they were worn by athletes or people who just wanted to keep warm. That changed as French haute-couture designers became obsessed with practical clothing, and found the jumper as something chic and perfectly suitable for the modern woman who required her clothes to be comfortable and free.
4. THE TWIN SET
On the other side of the Atlantic, the cashmere jumper became an it-piece in 1937 after actress Lana Turner sported one in the thriller They Won't Forget. Her outfit inspired designer Claire Potter to create a collection of cashmere jumpers decorated with sequins, beads and studs. Paired with a matching cashmere cardigan, the twin set was born and would become an important part of American fashion in the '50s and '60s.
5. THE EPITOME OF CASUAL ELEGANCE
Since being invented in the 1920s, the cashmere jumper has become a central part in any well-curated wardrobe. Perfect for a day at the office or as a layering piece for cold days spent outside. The silky-smooth fabric is hefty and lightweight at the same time and comes in an endless variety of colours and shapes. Celebrate the cashmere sweater and shop our H&M favourites below!
