Let's have a ball
Actress Ela Velden on how to rock any red carpet.
Don't have a gazillion to spend or a beauty team to groom you for days? Not a problem. H&M's new gala collection features four dresses, carefully created using different techniques, which are perfect for any fabulous gathering.
Ela Velden, an actress and Instagram It-girl, frequents more gala premieres and glamorous events than most, and took the four dresses on a trial run on a California afternoon. Keep swiping to see how to wear the chainmail mini, the floor-sweeping sequined frock, the hand-embroidered golden gown, and the edgy black fishnet dress.
LIST THREE THINGS TO THINK ABOUT WHEN GOING TO A RED CARPET EVENT.
"Express what defines you in one outfit, be yourself and be fabulous! You should wear the coolest thing you own, and to relax, laugh and have fun, too."
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS!
"Funny, artistic and authentic."
WHAT'S YOUR BEST RED CARPET MEMORY?
"It's the most fun to go to openings and premieres of my own films and projects. It's when I get to promote something that I'm passionate about, that's my own work that I have things to say about.
ANY AWKWARD MEMORIES?
"Yes... I went to a premiere with my boyfriend and was so nervous, so I held him very close to me. When we stood on the red carpet and had our picture taken I pulled him so hard that he fell over in front of all the media."
WHAT RED CARPET DO YOU DREAM OF WALKING?
"The Met Gala or The Oscars"
They were so detailed, carefully created, amazingly beautiful – and very sparkly!
ELA VELDEN ON THE GALA COLLECTION
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST REACTION WHEN SEEING THE GALA COLLECTION?
"That they were so detailed, carefully created, amazingly beautiful – and very sparkly!"
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE DRESS IN THE COLLECTION?
"The gold rhinestone dress. It's so beautiful and so heavy. Layering it over a T-shirt makes it a bit more relaxed and tones down the glamour a bit."
WHAT'S THE COOLEST THING YOU'VE DONE IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
"The latest project I did. It's a Mexican film called Falling into Temptation. I've often played the girl-next-door role in the past, but in this film, I portray a girl suffering from so many different issues and dealing with so much. It was such a wild experience for me to push my abilities and step out of my comfort zone."
WHAT'S YOUR DREAM ROLE?
"I would love to play Stella in Tennessee William's A Streetcar Named Desire."
WHEN DID YOU REALISE YOU COULD ACT?
"I actually started out as a model when I was very young, but discovered I wanted to do more in front of a camera than stand still and be quiet. I wanted to use my emotions, sensations, and feelings to create characters, which is why I ventured into acting."
WHEN DO YOU GET NERVOUS?
"I always get nervous right before going out on stage."
WHAT'S THE PERFECT RED CARPET BEAUTY LOOK?
"Wearing a statement-making dress without, or with just a little, makeup."
WHAT'S ONE BEAUTY PRODUCT YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT?
"Eye cream or anything that refreshes my eyes and gets rid of under-eye circles. Moisturising under-eye patches are a must."
WHO IS THE LAST PERSON THAT MADE YOU STAR STRUCK?
"Damián Alcázar. He's so kind and gave me great acting tips."
