How Lili Reinhart got ready for the Met Gala
The Riverdale star facetimed with her mum, ordered room service – and took many deep breaths.
The first Monday in May is the most sacred day in the fashion calendar. For 70 years, the Met Gala has brought the biggest names in culture, entertainment and the arts together to celebrate fashion's greatest creators – at the world's most covetable event. This year, the 21-year-old actress attended it for the first time. Lili Reinhart is one of Hollywood's brightest shining up-and-comers, and has millions of fans following her as Betty Cooper on The CW's hit show Riverdale.
Adhering to this year's Met Gala theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, H&M's design team created an astounding silver dress for the young star to walk up the museum steps in.
"I love the fabric of the dress. To me, it looks like running water. The dress has a long train which I think is so elegant and something I could only pull off at an event like the Met Gala. The elegance of the fabric paired with the strong, metal corset is a really interesting contrast that adds a badass element to the entire look," she said about her look while getting ready for the big night.
We caught up with Lili as she was getting ready for the gala in a hotel suite overlooking Central Park.
WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST PRIORITIES WHEN YOU CHOOSE A LOOK FOR AN EVENT LIKE THIS?
"That I feel beautiful in what I’m wearing. I want to feel like myself. If I’m uncomfortable, then it will show. I won’t be able to hide that. My clothes need to empower me. That’s what I look for… something that makes me feel beautiful or badass."
WHAT WAS IMPORTANT TO YOU IN THE DESIGN PROCESS?
"For the design, there was a sketch of the dress that was strapless and then one with long, flowing sleeves. I was immediately drawn towards the sketch with the long sleeves. When it came to the corset, I wanted it to be somewhat like a piece of armour. I wanted it to be made out of metal. The strong texture of the corset gives the dress an edge."
WHAT MAKES THE MET GALA SO SPECIAL, IN YOUR EYES?
"I think the Met Gala is special because it’s one night dedicated purely to fashion. It’s a chance to showcase the incredible designers that are prevalent today. Also, the theme makes the event entirely special. It gives designers and the guests an opportunity to create a design that perhaps they otherwise wouldn’t have thought of."

WHAT ARE YOUR PRE-GALA RITUALS?
"My pre-gala rituals will most likely consist of doing a face mask, ordering room service, listening to whatever songs make me feel powerful and strong, facetiming with my mum, and taking deep breaths."
WHO ARE YOU EXCITED TO MEET?
"Honestly, I am just happy to be there, so meeting actors and performers that I admire is just an incredible honour in itself. I don’t think I have the guts to introduce myself to Rihanna."
YOU JOINED OTHER H&M-DRESSED GUESTS AT THE MET GALA. IF YOU COULD CREATE YOUR DREAM PARTY, WHICH FOUR PEOPLE WOULD YOU INVITE?
"Hmmm... my dream party. I would invite Lady Gaga, Lana del Rey, my best friend Austyn and Rihanna."
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS YEAR’S THEME?
"I love this year’s theme. I think it gives designers a wonderful chance to create elegant pieces that are inspired by catholic imagination.”
DO YOU STILL EVER GET STARSTRUCK AT THESE EVENTS?
"I get completely starstruck! I’ll be surrounded by artists that I’ve looked up to for years. I feel honoured to be amongst them."
WHAT DO YOU HAVE ON YOUR BUCKET LIST, CAREER-WISE?
"I’d like to think that my career has only just begun. I want to work until I physically can’t anymore. My dream is to do features. I want to tell incredible stories through films."
