PRODUCT SUSTAINABILITY

Easy! Just open the H&M App and use the scan feature (look for a barcode scan icon) to scan the price tag for the product you are interested in. If the item is available online, you'll see the product page and there you’ll find Product Sustainability details.

H&M group collaborates with around 800 independent suppliers who usually own their own factories, but they may use others.

We work closely with our suppliers to support them in their efforts of becoming more sustainable. We only work with suppliers and factories who sign our strict Sustainability Commitment, which includes requirements for fair wages and good working conditions. We employ dedicated sustainability staff in our worldwide production offices to make sure the commitment is followed.  

We’re getting there! We have so many products being made by different suppliers and factories all over the world — and we have a new system to help us make all this information available to you. However, we can’t display all the details from before we started using the new system. We’re working hard to make sure all details will be available for all our products in the near future.

We’re continuously adding extra information about the sustainability of our materials, but for now we’re focusing on our most commonly used materials. You can, however, always see all the materials used to make a product in the composition details on the product page. 

It’s not unusual for the same product to be produced in several countries to achieve a more sustainable distribution over the world. That’s why the list you see could include more than one country, supplier and factory. 

When you purchase a product, you’ll see the specific country of production for that item printed on the label. It will be one of the countries listed on the Product Sustainability page.

Yes, we are continually updating the information from our suppliers and factories, such as changed addresses or numbers of workers. If we stop working with a supplier or factory, we’ll only be able to display the last information that we had at the point of collaboration.

H&M has recycling boxes in all clothing stores around the world. All textiles are welcome – from all brands and in any condition. Drop off your unwanted textiles in a H&M store in the garment-collecting box — usually next to the cash desks, and you’ll be rewarded with a voucher. Find out more here.

Once you've put your old clothes in the garment-collecting box, our business partner I:CO takes over. They collect the boxes, and then sort the contents into three categories: 

REWEAR — Clothing that can be worn again is marketed worldwide as second-hand goods. 

REUSE — Textiles that are no longer suitable to wear are made into other products, such as remake collections or cleaning cloths. 

RECYCLE — Textiles that can’t be reused get a new chance as textile fibres, or are used to manufacture products such as damping and insulating materials for the auto industry.
