How the sock boot came to be
We're socks over heels for the season's most trendy shoe.
1. A CROSS-BREED OF ATHLEISURE AND ELEGANCE
Hate it or love it, but athleisure is more than just a trend. The fashion movement that started in streetwear and spread all the way into haute couture is here to stay. A natural step for athleisure's entry into high fashion is the sock boot, incorporating the contrasting nature of the practical yet elegant fashion tendency into one pair of shoes.
2. FIRST CAME THE SOCK SNEAKERS
Before the sock boot came the sock sneaker. In either scuba or a cotton knit, the second-skin ankle-high shoe was made to fit your foot like an incredibly comfortable sweater, and launched as a micro trend. The shoes, which are basically just a sock mounted onto a sole, reminisce more of scuba diving boots than front row footwear, and were a key item in the Alexander Wang x H&M collection.
3. THE LUXURY SPIN ON IT
After athleisure, functional and streamlined pieces in technical materials have become the backbone of our wardrobes. The sock sneakers were first launched by the big athletic brands, but it was only a matter of time before a luxury brand would pick up on it. In 2015, the beyond-hyped Parisian label Vetements introduced their conceptual cigarette-lighter-heel sock boots, which became an instant classic sported by every celebrity that could get their hands on a pair.
4. REACHING PEAK SOCK BOOT
It's too early to say when we'll reach peak sock boot, but the ankle boot has become a defining part of fashion in the 2010s, and is every fashion girl's favourite right now. After the cigarette-lighter-heel, made in stretch-jersey with a stiletto heel, an array of styles and materials have surfaced.
5. SILHOUETTE PERFECT
A pair of sock boots match the current silhouette perfectly. With big pieces on top and slim bottoms, sock boots are the perfect pair of shoes to balance an oversized top and make your legs appear never-ending.
