CHIARA FERRAGNI ON BUILDING A FASHION EMPIRE
From unknown blogger to fashion industry heavyweight. Chiara Ferragni is one of the members in the H&M Design Award jury and tells us the secrets behind her fashion conglomerate and what three things you can do to up your Instagram game.
Milan-based Chiara Ferragni launched her blog The Blonde Salad in 2009. Now, nearly seven years later, the blog has grown into a global phenomenon and is much more a destination for fashion news and inspiration than a 28-year-old’s digital diary with snapshots of outfits and selected favourites. Aside from The Blonde Salad, Chiara Ferragni has launched her own namesake label, which is known for its sparkly shoes and accessories.
“I’ve always believed in myself and I’ve always tried to surround myself with talented people. I have a team of 18 people who’ve helped me grow, enrich my vision and develop my business,” she tells H&M Life about the secret behind her success.
Seven years is an extremely long time in blogger years, where we’ve seen countless young women and men reach Internet fame in a few days to later disappear from the scene just as quickly. For Chiara Ferragni, constant development and improvement has been key to keeping her readers and fans interested.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING THING TO KEEP READERS INTERESTED AFTER ALL THESE YEARS?
“Don’t be afraid of changing… constantly push yourself in doing better.“
On 7 December, she takes part in the jury for H&M Design Awards where she and seven other fashion experts will decide which young designer wins 50,000 euro and the opportunity to develop his or her collection and sell it at H&M. Despite her young age, Chiara Ferragni is no jury rookie.
“I’ll follow my heart, my taste and my instinct as always… I’ll try to get the best from every creation and to be the customer’s point of view,” she says about what role she will play in the jury.
WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO SEE IN THE DESIGNERS’ COLLECTIONS?
“I’m very interested in seeing how they will put their efforts to create something new… I hope that they will surprise me in terms of shapes and colours.”
IT’S TOUGH OUT THERE FOR YOUNG DESIGNERS. WHAT’S KEY TO MAKING IT?
“Work hard and truly believe in what you do and it’s not a failure yet.”
Out of all the jury members, Chiara Ferragni is the one with the biggest following on social media, where she recently reached five million on Instagram. Us knowingly, that’s more than any other in her field.
H&M Design Award 2016 takes place in London on 7 December.
