Natural rattan is strong and durable and can last a lifetime. Focusing on natural fibres and quality wood, PT Intera in Java, Indonesia proved to be the perfect manufacturer of our rattan furniture range.

When creating the lounge chair, there’s a human touch in every step of the production. The weaving process starts with stripping the raw rattan, separating it into thinner parts. These strips are polished, sorted and woven into a mesh. The diagonal pieces are mounted by hand, creating the classic look and making the weave even stronger. 

Using a circular inserter, the craftsman pushes the rattan into the wooden frame and staples it into place. He cuts the excess rattan and adds a thin rattan piece framing the webbing — the perfect finishing touch to a beautiful craft.

How teaching women to weave can bring equality to the villages of India.

The beauty of handicrafts lies in the details. A machine can never fully create the unique feeling of a handwoven seagrass vase or a braided rattan tray.

H&M HOME collaborates with the social initiative SNEH. Founded in 2019, SNEH gives women in the villages of Moradabad in India the opportunity to learn a craft — a skill that makes it possible to gain financial independence and break out of inequality. 

Since the start, 280 women have come here to learn a craft. After three months of formal training, the women become professional artisans. This means they can use their new knowledge to join one of Moradabad’s many craft manufacturers or set up their own craft shop in their village. However, 90% of the women choose to stay with SNEH when the training period is over, creating beautiful products for brands all over the world.

French perfume manufacturer Robertet is the leader in extracting scents from nature. All ingredients for the H&M HOME x Robertet fragrances are picked by hand and put together by one of the world’s most renowned noses, Jerome Epinette. When creating a new scent, Jerome allows the process to take time.

 “A scent is like a painting. You can always add a brush of red. A little bit of yellow. You can go on and on. But when I am happy and proud of my creation, I know it’s ready.”

Stationed in India, Raj Group is on a mission to find new and innovative ways to make carpets more sustainable.

The legacy of Raj Group goes back to pre-independence India. Founded in 1939, the weaving factory has stayed true to its roots, never letting go of the artisanal knowledge of weaving by hand. Today, they work with materials like organic and recycled cotton, jute, sisal, nettle, rice husk, Econyl and recycled PET bottles made into yarn. 

As the skilled weavers are working with their hands, every carpet becomes a unique piece of art. Each rug is different from the next, thanks to the variety of weaving techniques used, and the people that master them.

In the family-owned factory Val do Sol in Portugal, there’s a human touch to every plate, bowl and cup, making each piece of the H&M HOME ceramic collection unique.

The history of Val do Sol goes back to the late 1880s when the great-grandfather of today’s owner Eduardo Alves started a small pottery. Today, the ceramic production is on a larger scale, but the family have stayed true to their heritage through their love of craft. 

Ten hours in the kiln make the ceramic tableware strong and durable, and the beautiful glazing adds a final touch. All the pieces in the H&M HOME ceramic collection are hand-trimmed and hand-spunged, leaving a trace of the people who finished them.

The beauty of wood can’t be replicated. The grains add character to each plank, and even though they are all cut in the same direction, there will always be subtle differences.

Wood is an outstanding material. It is strong, versatile, biodegradable — and so stylish. Our wooden design products are all made in Jodphur, India. Here, the acacia and mango wood planks are measured and joined by hand. Each tray, cutting board and bowl is individually cut and hand polished to get a smooth finish.
