Back to school? A lesson in layering

Getting your kids ready for a new school start and preparing them for any weather conditions can sometimes be a bit… tricky? Let us ease your mind for a minute with this layering guide that will keep your kids warm, dry, happy, and comfortable – all year round.

The secret of layers

It’s all about what kind of layers you choose. Well-chosen layers will keep your child comfortable and one of the secrets is to combine both warm weather clothes and cold weather clothes. Kids and babies have a more difficult time regulating their body temperatures, so working with layers in the right sequence is a great start.

LAYER 1 – INNER LAYER

The key rule for a good base layer is soft, comfortable, and breathable materials like THERMOLITE® EcoMade technology- a lightweight material that keeps you warm when the temperature drops. The inner layer is also closest to the skin so no itching, please!

LAYER 2 – MID LAYER

Choose a material that traps the heat in cold temperatures and aim for some airflow between the base and middle layers to keep your kids warm. An excellent choice might be a breathable fleece that dries quickly and a pair of leggings.

LAYER 3 – OUTER LAYER

The outer layer or shell layer withstands rain, wind, and snow and is durable, functional, and flexible. Our functional materials enable kids to feel comfortable on their every adventure. Also - do not forget the smart reflectors for visibility & safe playing in the dark.

Checklist
Prepare your kids for their first day of kindergarten, or heading back to school, with everything they need for some outdoor fun. With the help of our checklist, you check off the essentials that will come in handy - regardless of what the weather forecast says.

Shell clothing
Opt for a wind repellant cover with a water-resistant Bionic Finish Eco impregnation, when choosing a shell jacket and a pair of shell trousers. A fun outdoor day requires a good, durable, and flexible cover – from head to toe.

Rain clothing
Whether they are splashing around in the puddles or exploring the forest on a rainy day – good rain gear is a real savior to keep the kids dry. Durable and flexible, and easy to rinse off - that is a solid choice for every wet outdoor adventure.

Wind jacket
Do not let the wind be a party pooper - let a good fleece jacket take care of the chilly wind, instead. A wind jacket with a soft inside made of fleece will keep them warm, happy, and comfortable.

Backpack
Kids will always need a cool backpack to put their things in wherever they're going. Snacks, schoolbooks, a pair of extra socks, or a pencil box – a great backpack fits all their favorite things.

Accessories
Make the wintry weather and the rainy days a bit more bearable (and stylish!) Padded gloves and a beanie always come in handy.

Shoes
A rainy day or some chilly weather brings a lot of fun such as puddles, mud, rain, and snow. Invest in durable, lined, water-resistant boots to keep freezing water and chilly temperatures away from their little feet.

Base layer
Layering is a fantastic way to work since kids rarely hold still and switch between sweating and freezing. Staying warm starts at the very bottom, choosing the perfect base layer to help them regulate the temperature without getting too hot or too cold.

Sustainability

Transform old into new
Only the imagination can stop you when it comes to transforming ripped clothes into new ones. Choose among patches and foot straps to save those well-worn outdoor kids’ clothes!

Wash less and wash cold
Yes, kids are messy. But if the clothes do not smell or if there’s visible dirt on them – there is no need to wash them. Washing clothes too often have a substantial impact on the environment and it also wears the clothes down faster. When it is time to wash, save energy by washing cold and turning the clothes inside out. Airdry to make them last longer!

Pass it on
There might be someone out there that could use your kid’s rain clothes, rain boots, or a warm fleece. A friend, a relative, or someone browsing around pre-loved items on Sellpy? Resell outgrown clothes to someone that needs them or pass them on to someone you love - let the clothes live a little longer.
