For a "mid" size 14-16 gal, I feel this dress in a size between the M and L would be perfect if you want a more fitted look. However, I kept this size. The length is prefect as it's on/just below the knee. The belt is slightly longer too compared to the Medium by 1-2 inches. You can wear without the belt for a slightly more relaxed look. The material is comfortable and moves nicely. Very smart for work and suitable for an evening out. The neck is low so would need a top underneath or you can pin the lapels together. I suppose you could adjust (by taking of and re-sewing further apart) the inner, side buttons if you have wider hips or legs.
